Augusta University Creative Writing Program

Augusta University Creative Writing Program The Creative Writing Program is the fastest-growing English major track offered by the Department of English & Foreign Languages at Augusta University.

One of four English major tracks, the Creative Writing Program offers courses in creative nonfiction, drama, fiction, and poetry, including special topics courses (e.g., The Beatles and Poetics, Medical Narrative, Persona Poetry). Creative writing faculty members are Simon Grant (MFA), Anna Caroline Harris (MFA), Jared Hegwood (PhD), Jim Minick (MFA), and Paul Sladky (MA, MA). Additionally, the Creative Writing Program sponsors the Sand Hills Writers Series, Writers Weekend at Summerville, and Sand Hills literary magazine. Please see our events section for details.

Thanks to a grant from South Arts, we were able to bring poet Ada Limón to Augusta for Writers Weekend this year. As part of her visit, Ada met with honors and AP Literature students at Lucy C. Laney High School. She told them, “Poetry always leads me toward the light.”

The Augusta University Creative Writing Program is hosting their annual Sand Hills Writers Series this coming Monday from 10 to 11:30 AM. There will be readings and discussions with featured writers, Linda Hogan and Rick Van Noy, followed by a reception. We'll be selling books at the event, but you can also pick them up beforehand at The Book Tavern. We will also have books by Augusta University professors, including Anna Harris-Parker: Poet, Spencer Wise, Jim Minick, and special guest Janisse Ray.

“'I remember thinking that opera stories were not very different from other stories: a boy meets a girl, they fall in love, they cannot be together for some reason, and most of the time it does not end happily ever after,'” she wrote.
