‘A Little Unconventional’ by Edna Martinez is a self-portrait done in Perler beads, the quintessential 90s vector craft. Edna’s work was also selected for the 2019 JSAE, when she created a portrait on her trademark medium, an Etch-A-Sketch!

“Without comments or criticism my art would be insipid. I am thankful for the opportunity to display my art in the Mary S. Byrd Gallery so that my work may continue to develop.”

Gerry O’Meara is a non-degree seeking ceramic student and a notable presence around the warehouse studios. Her thrown ‘Covered Vessel with Shell Fragment’ was awarded an Honorable Mention by the Morris Museum of Art, and this isn’t the first time her work has been honored at the JSAE!

“I aspire to live with an appreciation for and in harmony with nature. This is reflected in my attempt to link organically formed objects with my own controlled ceramic pieces thus creating a fusion of natural and man-made art. I appreciate the opportunity of sharing this perspective with the viewer.”

Angel Moreno
creates works that are well-crafted and as bright as his personality. For Angel, "Being selected for the Juried Show is more than just an honor and a privilege, it’s the impulse I need to continue working with discipline, dedication, and determination. I am grateful to be a part of this spectacular event." Fun FYI: The fiddle is crafted entirely of cardboard.

Our Mission

The mission of Mary S. Byrd Gallery of Art is to explore and exhibit contemporary visual art and research in all media produced by the most distinguished and relevant contemporary artists today. As such, it aims to serve as a component in enhancing the university’s culture of creativity, innovation, and excellence. Through the direct experience of art, students discover how art is the foremost vehicle to foster the self-discovery, problem solving, and collaborative skills needed by leaders in the world of today. Looking beyond the aesthetic functions of art, the vibrant exhibition program aims to examine the cultural, social, political or economic context that informs the work on display. An active visiting artists program complements the exhibits allowing students and visitors to engage with distinguished visiting artists, critics and thinkers. The gallery acts as an important link between the Department of Art and Design and the university community (students, scientists, faculty, alumni, patrons), the regional and national arts community and the general public.
