The Maxwell Theatre is looking forward to a time when Storyland Theatre will be back with us.

In the meantime, if you are interested in having your class view this production for FREE email Storyland Theatre at [email protected] .

Now meet Buttercup's boyfriend, Firefly. He would do anything to keep Buttercup safe and happy.

On April 19, "Humphrey Clinker Gets His Wish" will launch with a special link for any teacher, class, school, homeschool - in any county- anywhere - to view this wonderful production online, right in class. FREE. Just email us and tell us how many students and adults will be viewing the show for our records. We will send the unique private link to use anytime April 19 to April 23. We'll send Standards, Lesson Plan Ideas, Discussion Questions - even coloring pages for the younger grades. Please share the word.

Sometime after, we'll make the show available to everyone, anywhere, to watch and enjoy. It's our gift to the children since we can't perform for you all in person right now.

Faculty Spotlight Friday!

Meet Dr. Pawel Kozak

“Teaching and sharing my love of music with our AU students is the most thrilling part of my day. Students, as we approach the end of the semester and your schedules fill up with recitals, concerts, exams, etc., I hope that this quote by Leonard Bernstein inspires you to keep going: ‘To achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan, and not quite enough time’. Have a plan, do your absolute best, and great things will happen in your life!”

Dr. Pawel Kozak is a Lecturer in Music at Augusta University, where he directs the AU orchestra and teaches applied viola, music literature, and ear training. Prior to his appointment at AU Kozak taught violin and viola at Lander University and at the Presbyterian College.

Dr. Kozak received his D.M.A. from The University of Georgia, where he studied violin with Professor Levon Ambartsumian and viola with Dr. Mark Neumann. His dissertation, “Pedagogical Examination of Henryk Wieniawski’s L’École Moderne Opus 10,” presents specific challenges found in these caprices and demonstrates how each difficulty can be resolved through proper practice techniques.

Dr. Kozak is the principal second violinist and personnel manager with the Augusta Symphony, and performs regularly as a member of Lyra Vivace Chamber Orchestra and the South Carolina Philharmonic. He can be heard as a section violinist in ARCO Chamber Orchestra’s numerous recordings and as a soloist in Vivaldi’s concerto for four violins.

Courageous Conversations with Raymond Santana

The Lyceum Series and the Multicultural Student Engagement Office will be virtually hosting Raymond Santana on February 18th at 6pm on WebEx. He is a member of The Exonerated Five formerly known as “The Central Park” Five. Their story was the focus of Netflix’s miniseries “When They See Us”. The five men were wrongfully convicted and sent to prison as teenagers for assaulting a woman who was jogging in Central Park in 1989. Santana spent five years in prison for a crime he did not commit.

He will discuss our Criminal Justice System and current Social Justice Movements.

Live stream viewing will be available in the Lee Auditorium for the first 50 students. Those in attendance will receive a boxed dinner and a MSE T-Shirt.

Speaking Shakespeare

Every other Tuesday - 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. – Maxwell Theatre Portico (outside in front of the theatre)

Meet other students!
Come to the Summerville Campus.
(free and open to all AU students, faculty and staff)

It’s time to play your part!

Starting on February 16th we will read:

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, by William Shakespeare

Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare’s most famous romantic comedies. Full of clever dialogue and plot twists, its richly detailed characters come painfully close to tragedy before good fortune—and a clever use of deception—lead to a bittersweet comic resolution.

Snacks and drinks provided. Masks required. A copy of Much Ado About Nothing will be provided to each person attending.

From West Side Story to The Lion King, to Hamilton, the works of Shakespeare continue to have an out-sized influence on modern culture, and reading the plays aloud can illuminate the widely-varying decisions directors and actors have made over centuries of Shakespearean drama.

Best of all, reading Shakespeare out loud is FUN. Without the help of sets, lights, costumes, or even a theater, the larger-than-life characters and stories jump off the page. As you get your “Shakespeare ears” and practice the basics of reading iambic pentameter, you will fall in love, fight wars, create magic, and see ghosts, all within the safety of the portico.

Speaking Shakespeare, a collaboration of the Department of English and World Languages and the Maxwell Theatre, is open to all AU students, faculty, and staff.
