The U.S. Department of State issued a Worldwide Caution message for U.S. citizens on October 19, 2023. View this message on the US Department of State website, via the link in bio, and below.

Western Washington University’s Education Abroad (EdAbroad) office encourages all those abroad to review and follow the advice the State Department issued in its Worldwide Caution and the Travel Advisory specific to your host country.

Worldwide Caution:
Due to increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests, the Department of State advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution. U.S. citizens should:
• Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists.
• Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive information and alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency overseas.
• Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter.

When you travel and study abroad, it is crucial to respect the host communities. Recent trends of tourists acting poorly abroad hurt host communities and can impact restrictions set on tourism.

Excited about the possibility of studying abroad, but not sure how you’re going to pay for it? Remember, studying abroad is an investment, and our partners at API can help!

API awards hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships each year and has accessible resources to help inform you of additional scholarships you may be eligible for. Keep in mind, you may be able to use your existing financial aid toward the cost of your study abroad program, making it a financially viable option and a wise investment in the future. Take time to learn more about scholarships now - oftentimes, the earlier you apply, the more money you can get so don’t wait!

Good news! Studying abroad doesn’t have to break the bank! In fact, programs with providers like API Study Abroad - Academic Programs International can actually be more affordable than the average cost of a semester at a U.S. university because all API programs include housing, tuition, excursions, and more!

Most financial aid can also transfer to this experience! Talk to your financial aid advisor when you are back on campus to figure out how much aid you can use abroad. There are also tons of scholarship opportunities that our providers at API can help you explore! You can visit Education Abroad and learn more about Western Washington University financial aid and scholarships that can help pay for your journey.

Let’s talk visas! You may or may not need a visa to enter the country in which your study abroad program is hosted. It’s okay if you don’t yet know where you’d like to study abroad, but it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with visas and the application process now, just in case you do need one.
