The Students Serving Washington Awards (SSWA) is a collaboration between Washington Campus Compact and EcoApprentice which aims to recognize and reward the work of outstanding Washington higher education students who are engaged in addressing and solving, critical ecological, economic and social issues in our state, nation, and world. Specifically, the Awards will recognize students and their proj
ects in the following critical issue areas: health and safety, sustainability, education, economic development, diversity and social justice, and global leadership. About the Awards:
Outstanding Student Service Award:
The Outstanding Service Award will recognize students at Washington Campus Compact member institutions who are engaged in current service projects addressing the critical issue areas identified above. Student service leaders submit an online application form consisting of project details, stories, photos and videos. Students are encouraged to utilize social media to promote and highlight their work. In addition to the online application, students are asked to submit a letter of recommendation from faculty or administrators from their higher education institution, or community-based organizations where the students serve. Parents, classmates and other community members are invited to participate in the process, either by volunteering in the service project, or by voting for their favorite service project through social media. A Selection Committee of statewide policy, nonprofit, business, and community leaders will select the award winners from the pool of applicants. The award will recognize one student from a two-year institution and one student from a four-year institution. Additionally, the student’s institution and community partner will receive recognition and an award as well. Award Details: Outstanding Service Award winners will receive a $7,500 award divided equally between the students, their institution, and community partner for current service projects addressing critical issues in Washington. Social Entrepreneur Award
The Social Entrepreneur Award represents the collaborative and innovative spirit of the Students Serving Washington Awards. Washington Campus Compact will present a unique question, or social entrepreneurial challenge, in each of the critical issue areas. These social entrepreneur challenges will act as prompts for student service leaders to develop novel, innovative solutions that address the identified challenge. Student teams at WACC member institutions will work on the questions posed, creating a proposal for how to address the challenge. Student proposals will include a project narrative, logic model, budget, and a literature review. Winners will receive seed grants through their institution to begin implementing their proposed solutions during the following academic year. Award Details: Social Entrepreneur Award recipients will receive $10,000 in seed grant funding to be used for developing their proposal into a project that addresses the critical issue. Presidents' Awards
Presidents’ Awards will be given to two selected student service leaders from each of the Washington Campus Compact member institutions for their leadership and service. Each Washington Campus Compact member President will be invited to choose two student service leaders to be recognized for their exceptional leadership and commitment to serving their community.
