Want a clinical letter of recommendation that stands out? Part 2 is for you. 🩺👇

In Part 2 of our LOR series, our Assistant Dean of Recruitment shares 3 proven ways to turn a routine clinical experience into an exceptional recommendation:

1️⃣ Commit to Quality Hours: Aim for 100–200 hours with the same provider so your AMCAS experiences list aligns directly with their letter.
2️⃣ Show Intellectual Curiosity: Don’t just observe—bring in relevant medical journal articles or ask thoughtful questions about interesting patient cases during downtime.
3️⃣ Leave the Practice Better Than You Found It: Add tangible value to the clinic, like creating a patient education handout or helping streamline clinic workflow.

On 9/23, the National Military Dermatology Interest Group is hosting ✨Dermatology Fellowship night✨ for all interested applicants to learn more about the various dermatology fellowships available through the military. The Class of 2028 remembers 9/11 nationwide! A true testament that USUHS will

In Hawaii, 2LT Michael Kim arranged a 9.11km memorial run. A memorial board was created with stories of 8 individuals: LTC Karen Wagner, Dr. Paul Wesley, Dr. Yeneneh Betru, Master Sergeant Max Beilke, Captain Charles Burlingame III, Thomas Burnett Jr., Major Wallace Hogan Jr., Terence Michael Lynch, all who had passed away from 9/11.

In Virginia, ENS Anne Fisher (WR) was joined by ENS Brian He and 2LT Miguel Pantano on a 2.5 mile memorial run for 25 years of remembrance.

In Hawaii, students wrote the names of those who have passed on a wristband that was worn on their 9.11km run.

In Washington, 2LT Nigel Park and 2LT Alex Barret took part in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Challenge.

In Texas, 2LT Nam Tran arranged a walk to the Alamo where ENS Lorraine Rowe, 2LT Mihai Fratian, and 2d Lt Daniel Schleif joined to discuss how 9/11 has reshaped medicine.

Set your recommenders up for success with these 3 essential tips directly from our Dean of Recruitment:

1️⃣ Share the AAMC Guidelines: Send your writers the official AAMC Letter Writing Guidelines so they know exactly what medical school admissions committees are evaluating.
2️⃣ Send an Updated CV/Resume: Give them a clear snapshot of your academic accomplishments, clinical hours, and military/leadership background.
3️⃣ Provide Personal Highlights: Write out a few key interactions, projects, or achievements you shared with them to help them write specific, vivid anecdotes instead of generic praise.

Make it as easy as possible for your writers to advocate for you! 💡

This morning, the USUHS community gathered in the pouring rain to run, walk, and ruck in remembrance of September 11, 2001.

We listened to the stories of those who were there, the lives impacted, and the generations of service members who have carried that legacy forward.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the lives forever changed and the courage, sacrifice, and service that followed.

Today, and always, we remember.

Never Forget. 🇺🇸
