Artificial intelligence is neither a guaranteed utopia nor an inevitable apocalypse, and we should stop treating it like one, according to Amandeep Gill, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Special Envoy for Digital and Emerging Technologies.

Gill, who leads tech innovations for the U.N., discussed the future of AI during a presentation for more than 150 attendees at Lehigh University on Sept. 2. As the U.N.’s chief tech envoy, he spearheads global AI governance, digital cooperation, and the implementation of the U.N.’s Global Digital Compact.

Gill rejected the idea that technology alone will determine AI’s future, arguing that people still have control over how it develops. As technological power becomes concentrated among fewer private companies and infrastructure limits emerge, Gill urged policymakers, educators, and students to take an active role in shaping AI before it causes serious harm.

“There are no dystopias or utopias either,” Gill said. “This is one of the traps to be avoided today, and some people actually would like us to fall into one of these traps, so we fear losing agency or can be sold a dream. Between the hype and the horror, there is a wise path, and that's what we should be looking at.”

In response to the federal Duration of Status rule change, Lehigh University's Office of International Affairs (OIA) has invited two lawyers from Green and Spiegel, LLC to host a hybrid town hall for international students and scholars and their families.

This is an important informational discussion regarding changes to immigration policy for students with F and J visas. During this session, the immigration lawyers will explain the Duration of Status rule and what is currently known about its implementation, provide their perspective on its implications for Lehigh’s international community, and address participant questions.

The session is intended to provide general information about the rule and its implementation and should not be considered individual legal advice. This event will be held on Tuesday, September 1, in a hybrid format, with the option to attend either in person in or virtually.

Bioengineering professor Anand Ramamurthi has been appointed Associate Dean for Global Engineering Initiatives in Lehigh University's P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, effective July 1.

Ramamurthi concluded his six-year tenure as chair of the Department of Bioengineering to assume the newly created position, where he will lead the college’s efforts to expand international partnerships, strengthen global research collaborations, and create new opportunities for students and faculty.

"Mine, yours, ours," is the philosophy of Unidad Educativa Mine School, a small alternative learning community nestled in the Andes Mountains near Quito, Ecuador.

Founded by four female educators, the school serves children from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade and reimagines education through a human-centered approach. Instead of traditional classrooms, students learn in geodesic domes and safari tents, where nature becomes a “third teacher” of sorts. Nearly a decade after opening, the school remains at capacity without a website or advertising; its reputation speaks for itself.

This summer, Julia Gallo M.Ed.’27 and Lillian Feldman Ph.D’30 traveled to Ecuador through the Lee Iacocca Institute for Global Leadership’s Iacocca International Internship Program. There, they spent two transformative months learning, teaching, and steeping themselves in the local culture.

After leading the Lee Iacocca Institute for Global Leadership through a period of growth and transformation as interim Executive Director, Leah Mason has been appointed the Institute's permanent Executive Director.

Mason officially assumed the permanent role on July 1. She served as interim Executive Director for the past six months, a time during which the Lee Iacocca Institute announced its new name and relocated to its new home in the Rauch Business Center.

“Leah has demonstrated exceptional leadership during her time as interim Executive Director, bringing vision, collaboration, and a deep commitment to preparing students for leadership in an interconnected world,” said Cheryl Matherly, Vice President & Vice Provost for International Affairs.

“I am thrilled to see her step into this role permanently and look forward to the continued growth and impact of the Lee Iacocca Institute for Global Leadership under her leadership,” Matherly said.
