Last week, we had the honor of welcoming back to campus Mining and Minerals Engineering alumni Patrick S. Sobecke and Dr. Chad Sechrist, PhD, PE from Stantec for an engaging panel discussion in the Resource Engineering Leadership Seminar, moderated by Dr. Nino Ripepi.

The panel explored professional engineering consulting, career development, PE licensure, international mining opportunities, engineering ethics, and leadership in the mining industry. Drawing on their diverse professional experiences, Patrick and Chad shared valuable insights and practical advice to help our graduating seniors prepare for successful careers in mining and minerals engineering.

🦃⛏️ Our students took this weekend's Hokie Homecoming as an opportunity to showcase Mining Engineering! They had a great time manning the MME booth, chatting with visitors, answering questions about the program, and discussing how state-of-the-art technologies like drones are impacting the mining industry. The fair gives Hokies an opportunity to explore academic programs, connect with current students and faculty, and discover new possibilities for their future. ⛏️ Another Successful MME Career Fair in the Books! 🦺

Last week’s career fair and industry interviews were a great success for Virginia Tech Mining and Minerals Engineering students!

From showing up professionally dressed and prepared to engaging with industry representatives, our students put their best foot forward. The career fair gave them valuable opportunities to learn about the mining industry, make professional connections, explore summer internship opportunities, and pursue full-time positions as graduation approaches. 🤝💼

We’re proud to see our Hokies taking these important steps toward their future careers. And great work to all of our dedicated staff and faculty for organizing the fair as well as the many representatives who came to Blacksburg to meet our students!

🏈 A Familiar Face on the Jumbotron!

At the recent Virginia Tech–Pitt football game, University Distinguished Professor Dr. Roe-Hoan Yoon was recognized alongside Virginia Tech’s other members of the National Academy of Inventors.

A longtime leader in mining and minerals engineering, Dr. Yoon was elected an NAI Fellow in 2022 for his significant contributions to mineral processing and separation technologies. His work has helped advance how we recover and process the minerals essential to our world. We’re proud to see his innovation and impact recognized on the field—and beyond.

What better way to prepare students for leadership in mining than to put them in the room with professionals who have spent their careers making tough decisions, leading teams, and navigating change?

Richard Bishop’s Senior Resource Engineering Leadership Seminar recently welcomed Virginia Tech Mining and Minerals Engineering Industry Advisory Board members Brittany Horton, Craig Hairfield, and Rick Kim for a candid leadership and career panel.

Students asked questions and heard firsthand perspectives on leadership, mine safety, operations, finance, business strategy, career transitions, and what it takes to grow into positions of responsibility—exactly the kind of real-world perspective our Industry Advisory Board brings to VT MME, connecting students with experienced professionals and insights that go well beyond the classroom.

We’re grateful to Brittany, Craig, and Rick for investing their time in our students and supporting the next generation of mining engineers and industry leaders. 🔨
