The New Music + Technology Festival returns this fall, September 14–19!

Six days of new music, experimental performance, spatial sound, and technology come together across ICAT’s spaces, with performances in the CID Concert Hall, the Cube, and Sandbox.

This year’s lineup includes CID Concert, Drosera Obscura, Eric Lyon: Spatial Music featuring Annie Stevens and Alan Weinstein, and WORMWOOD, or dances for the demon AI in the organic apocalypse.

Join us for a week of performances that bring music, technology, and new forms of creative expression together.

ICAT's Tom Martin and Lisa McNair are introducing the Da Vinci's Cube, a new framework that puts emotion, empathy, sensory perception, and aesthetics at the center of discovery, not on the sidelines of it.

Building on the well-known Pasteur's Quadrant, the Cube adds a third axis: sentiment. It's a new way to identify opportunities, frame problems, and generate ideas by bringing artistic and scientific thinking together, with implications for interdisciplinary research, higher education, talent development, and organizational innovation.

The framework was developed with colleagues at Leonardo and Northeastern University and is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts Research Labs program.

The Center for Future Work Places and Practices (CFWPP) is now accepting applications for its 2026 Proposal Development Grants.

Two interdisciplinary teams will receive $10,000 each to develop research proposals exploring how AI is reshaping the future of work, from human-AI collaboration to worker agency, data governance, and workforce training.

Funds can support:

• Pilot research and data collection
• Graduate or undergraduate student support for preliminary research
• Proposal development and grant writing assistance
• Team-building and stakeholder engagement
• Travel and other proposal-related activities
• Stakeholder meetings, grant-writing support, and other proposal development activities

Eligibility: Teams must include a PI and co-PI from two or more Virginia Tech colleges, with both serving as CFWPP faculty affiliates. Collaborations across the Blacksburg, Roanoke, and Alexandria campuses are encouraged.

Application deadline: August 31, 2026.

Cube Fest is back this fall, and registration is officially open!

Join us for three days of immersive performances, spatial audio experiences, artist talks, workshops, and interactive installations as Cube Fest 2026 explores this year's theme: Spoken Words.

Cube Fest brings together artists, musicians, researchers, and audiences to experience how voice, storytelling, and technology intersect in The Cube.

Spatial Audio Tidepool kicked off this week at Virginia Tech.
