Laura "Margaret" Lantz Birke graduated from the Appalachian State Teachers College in 1948. She spent her teaching career in primary grades and special education. Originally from Lincolnton, NC, Mrs. Birke retired in 1987 after 30 years in teaching, in Cumberland County.
She met her husband while he was a student at Appalachian State. After two years at ASU, Mr. Birke transferred to UNC-CH. They were married for 74 years at the time of his passing in 2025. Her family includes two daughters, Kathryn Birke, ASU class of 1975, and Amy Birke Dean, one grandson and one great granddaughter. Her favorite pet is Sophie, a Siamese cat.
While a student at Appalachian State Teachers College, Mrs. Birke was involved in many activities. She was a part of Rhododendron as Editor, Student Council, a Band Majorette, Forum Club, YWCA, Future Teachers of America, Appalachian staff, Baton Club, Girls’ Chorus, a Junior Marshall, Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, International Relations Club, and Appalachian Community of Educators.
Mrs. Birke's favorite memory from Appalachian State is being with her group of friends while 'majoring' in their extracurricular activities. Those friendships spanned many decades.
Today her hobbies are exploring family history, sewing and crafts. She loves music and her family. Mrs. Birke is a member of Haymount United Methodist Church, the NC Association of Educators and Cumberland Co. Retired School Personnel.
Congratulations to Mrs. Birke on being recognized as an Outstanding Alumni in the Fayetteville area.
