This month for , we’re excited to introduce Stephen Ellis, Associate Director of Asset Strategy & Resilience in the Office of the Vice President at CPO!
Stephen joined BU more than seven years ago after working at the Boston-based nonprofit Second Nature where he focused on data management, greenhouse gas guidance and inventorying, and evaluating climate action targets. His move to BU was driven by a desire to deepen his impact within a university setting, and he’s been doing just that ever since
During his time at BU, Stephen spent seven years with as the Director of Data Analytics, served as the inaugural Vice-Chair of the Faculty & Staff of Color Alliance and, since January 2024, currently serves as an Expert in Residence (EiR) for BU Spark!, mentoring student teams working on real-world sustainability data projects.
Stephen’s career in higher education sustainability spans more than a decade, beginning with energy conservation work as an undergraduate at the University at Albany. In this role he used data management strategies, databases, and stakeholder engagement to inform decisions that address sustainability challenges in communities and buildings.
"Working with Campus Planning & Operations has given me access to a wealth of diverse knowledge that supports and informs the intersectional work I do. Also, I enjoy being able to laugh with my colleagues."
Over the past three months, Stephen has been working with teams across CPO, Auxiliary Services, OFAA, and Sustainability to prepare the FY27 Capital Asset Renewal Submission. Looking ahead to the new year, Stephen hopes to evaluate BU’s capital asset inventory and condition assessment systems in collaboration with FMO. His goal is to develop a proactive model that strengthens asset lifecycles, supports capital renewal, and aligns BU’s physical infrastructure with long-term financial and operational priorities, including BU's Climate Action Plan.
Outside of work, you might find Stephen serving on Boston’s BERDO Review Board, where he helps oversee building decarbonization with a focus on Environmental Justice communities, or exploring the city's hidden speakeasies.
