The Association for Writing Across the Curriculum and the WAC Clearinghouse recently announced the winners of the Exemplary WAC Program Awards, recognizing the extraordinary achievements of WAC directors and/or administrative teams to establish, maintain, and sustain programs that foster and facilitate exemplary engagement with writing across the curriculum at their institution, as well as institutional commitments to support these achievements. The winner of the emerging (1-5 years) category is Writing Across the Curriculum at UMass Boston, co-directors Lauren Bowen and Matthew Davis, associate director Janet Stevens. Boston Teachers Union Collections Project: Professor Nick Juravich, Associated Director of the Labor Resource Center (and faculty member in the Department of History), co-directs the BTU Collections Project with retired BTU Secretary-Treasurer Betsy Drinan. To date, we have collected thirty oral histories with union leaders, members and organizers; digitized a near-complete run of the BTU's newspaper, the Boston Union Teacher; created content and led workshops for BTU members at conferences, and conducted two participatory archiving events with BTU members. All of these projects, along with the BTU's documentary records, are archived in the University Archives and Special Collections at UMass Boston's Healey Library, and the digital materials can be accessed through the University’s Open Archives platform. In 2026, Professor Juravich was awarded a Sharing Community Histories grant through Northeastern University’s Humanities Center. As part of the Sharing Community Histories Network, Juravich and Drinan have presented on the BTU Collections Project for a cohort of community-focused historians at Northeastern, and are using the opportunity to develop new ways to share the collections online and in print.

Professor Dana Johnson of Public Policy and Public Affairs will be receiving the Society of Family Planning (my research field's professional society) Next Generation Award at our Annual Meeting on October 18th. This "award honors individuals early in their careers who have exhibited commitment to the field of family planning through their research or clinical practice. Individuals are eligible to receive this award if they are currently in training or have completed training in the past five years."

Congratulations to Sarah Ribeiro, who was selected as a co-winner of the American Society of Criminology's Division on Critical Criminology & Social Justice Undergraduate Student Paper Award for her paper, Crimmigration and Latino Threat: Explaining Public Support for Deportation in the 2024 General Social Survey.
Sarah completed an Honors Major in Criminology & Criminal Justice under the supervision of Professor Christopher Contreras. Sarah graduated summa cm laude from UMass Boston in May 2026, earning minors in Philosophy and Psychology in addition to her Criminology & Criminal Justice major. She will be recognized alongside other award recipients at the Division on Critical Criminology & Social Justice social during the American Society of Criminology's annual meeting in Chicago this November.
