Henry Luce Foundation awards Kentucky Museum additional grant for Folk Art project

The Kentucky Museum at WKU will continue to catalog and digitize its Folk Art collection with support from a $77,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation.

The grant will provide funding for the third year (2022-23) of the project, extending the Curator of Folk Art position and providing funding for year two of a Folk Studies graduate assistantship focused on collaboratively cataloging and digitizing the Folk Art collection into the Museum’s PastPerfect and KenCat databases. This grant supplements an earlier $155,000 grant, bringing the total support from the Henry Luce Foundation to $232,000 over three years.

One of Mayfield, Kentucky’s early elected officials was “Colonel” Robert Cook “Bob” James, who (when he wasn't working as a carpenter) served as a deputy jailer and acting chief of police in the early 1900s. Recognized as one of the area's pioneers who came to the area in the 1830’s, his actions were frequently a topic of interest for The Daily Messenger, which referred to him as “one of the bravest men in the county.” Bravery aside, there was certainly ample evidence he found use for a gun on more than one occasion during the course of his duties. With the last name of James and living where and when he did, there were also strong rumors within the family (which remain unfounded) that the outlaw Jesse James may have been kin. Even The Daily and The Saturday Messenger joined in by referring to Colonel Bob as “Jesse” James—frequently. Considering the realities of Western Kentucky, this was not necessarily viewed as a bad thing. At the very least, according to his grandson, Haskell Jones, the entire James side of his family was “gun-happy,” with more than one member being involved in fatal gunplay. The photo shows Robert Cook James and his wife Martha (Keesee) James outside their home at 204 E. South Street in Mayfield in the early 1900’s. Today, it is an empty lot. The story of his involvement with Mayfield’s Tom Tinker, who was lynched in front of the court house in 1915, is told in my book, On A Burning Deck, The Road to Akron. www.OnABurningDeck.com
Meltin’ Pot Despite a nationwide recession in 1921, the only employment challenge in Paducah was actually finding people who were willing to work. As the Evening Sun noted, “One Paduchan made an effort last week to get a hundred workmen for a special job, and went up the Tennessee river to obtain them. Not a single man was interested in his offer.” They were all making moonshine. Instead of engaging in “shine,” Haskell Jones found a job as a motorman on the streetcar line, where he came to personally know the moonshiners, revenuers, gamblers and girls. www.OnABurningDeck.com
