TOM:Cornell University

TOM:Cornell University TOM: Cornell is the Tikkun Olam Makers (TOM) community at Cornell which hosts annual makeathons to develop solutions for people with disabilities.

TOM:NYC (nyc.tomglobal.org) is a local community of makers, designers, developers, and engineers working together with people with disabilities to develop technological solutions for everyday challenges. On April 21-23, we are teaming up with Cornell University for a combined makeathon/hackathon to create software/hardware solutions for everyday challenges faced by people living with disabilities.

By harnessing the skills of students, engineers, designers, developers, innovators and creators, participants from different disciplines, schools, and fields form diverse teams and solve current problems proposed by our need-knowers and create working prototype solutions. Join us for the three-day event! Work with other innovators in one of the most exciting and creative spaces for the experience of a lifetime. Sign up today, nyc.tomglobal.org.

TOM:NYC was a three-day Makeathon to create affordable, assistive technology addressing needs of people with disabilities at New Lab in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in April of 2017.

TOM: Tikkun Olam Makers is an organization and a global movement of makers working to develop extremely affordable solutions for the unmet needs of people with disabilities.

New York’s first Tikkun Olam Makeathon, led by Brooklyn-based industrial designer Oded Shorer, was a partnership with Cornell University and the Mayor's Office for People With Disabilities and featured 15 teams of “makers” (engineers, product designers, developers and coders) who united with “need-knowers” (individuals with a deep understanding of a specific disability or challenge) to create hardware prototypes where there was no market interest due to prohibitive cost or speciality of condition.

Designs are set for online publishing for public domain use, accessible to those with similar disabilities around the world.
