This post is part of our Faculty Feature Series, celebrating the educators who support, encourage, and empower adult learners at Campbell University. 🐪🎓

Professor Dan Simon teaches algebra and statistics to students from incredibly diverse backgrounds—many of whom haven’t taken a math class in decades and may approach the subject with anxiety or fear. From day one, he meets students where they are 🤝, focusing on confidence‑building, strong habits, and a growth mindset.

One of the most meaningful moments of his career came when students selected him to carry the mace at an Anson Correctional Institution commencement—an honor that reflects the trust, respect, and connection he builds with his students.

Professor Simon also works to dispel the idea that math is simply “right or wrong.” While answers matter, he emphasizes growth, revision, and exploring multiple paths to success - skills that extend far beyond the classroom. ➗📊

His advice to students?
👉 Pay attention to the subjects you don’t enjoy. Those skills often become unexpectedly valuable later in life.

We’re proud to spotlight faculty who bring real‑world leadership and experience straight into the classroom - and Professor Peter Gallagher does exactly that. 👏

Major General (Ret.) Gallagher teaches several Homeland Security courses, helping students think critically about national and international security, terrorism, and intelligence. His focus goes beyond theory—students learn how to understand context, analyze complex situations, develop smart options, and communicate clearly with decision‑makers. 🧠📊🗣️

One especially meaningful Campbell moment for him was attending his son’s ROTC commissioning and graduation—a powerful intersection of family, service, and education. 🇺🇸🎓

Professor Gallagher also reminds students that homeland security skills aren’t just for security professionals. The analytical thinking, communication, and leadership skills developed in these courses apply across industries and career paths.
