Among the several thousand 4-H'ers demonstrating their skills at the Eastern States Exposition (the Big E) in 2026, 16 Vermont youth recently traveled to West Springfield to show horses, working steers, and sheep.

Also: 29 youth demonstrated their knowledge and skills in the 4-H Dairy Show.

A new resource is now available across Vermont for forest managers and landowners navigating climate change impacts and stewardship. UVM Extension Assistant Professor of Forestry Dr. Ali Kosiba has written a four-part guide, published by Northern Woodlands.

In a Q&A with UVM Extension Communications Manager Elodie Reed, Ali shares some tips from the guide, including what can be done in upland forests to help slow rainwater and reduce flooding in lowlands.

Vermont farmers will soon face new restrictions on one of the most widely used classes of insecticides, neonicotinoid insecticides. The Foundation for Food & Agriculture Research (FFAR), One Hive Foundation and the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets are investing $150,000 through the Rapid Outcomes from Agricultural Research (ROAR) program to study how farmers can protect crops and maintain yields as Vermont phases out most uses of neonicotinoid insecticides.

Led by Dr. Heather Darby , Extension Professor and Agronomic and Soils Specialist at the University of Vermont, researchers are studying three factors that could manage pests with less reliance on neonicotinoids: soil management, planting dates and alternative seed treatments.

Researchers will also partner with eight Vermont farms to compare corn grown with and without neonicotinoid-treated seed under real-world conditions.

Did you know: Vermont had an office for attracting tourists to our scenic, agricultural landscape, starting all the way back in 1911?

What about the nineteenth-century Vermont legislation that once required margarine, a competitor to dairy farmers' butter, to be colored pink?

Former Vermont Secretary of Agriculture Roger Allbee shared these historical facts and more at the Center for Research on Vermont's 2026 Samuel Hand Lecture, held at UVM on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Extension leaders sat among the audience for Allbee's talk. Drawing on research for his 2025 book, Turning the Soil: 250 Years of Vermont Agriculture, Allbee led an exploration through the state's agricultural past, its constant reinvention, and how that might carry forward to the future.

In closing his presentation, Allbee quoted his friend, the late Jack Lazor from Butterworks Farm: "For Vermont to stay ahead, they always have to change, and always have to do the research."
