Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African-Americans, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of Brotherhood among African descendants in this country. ckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy. Zeta Xi Lambda Chapter was officially chartered as a chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. on January 18, 1956 in Evanston, IL as an Alumni Chapter. Its charter members were Robert L. Barrett, Theodore M. Harding, Scott N. Harper, Nathaniel C. Hawk, William Martin, James L. Patrick, Charles M. Smith, Joseph W. Swafford, Arnold F. Winfield, and Prentice H. Winfield. The chapter was later re-chartered in Champaign, IL on September 1, 2004. The charter members consisted of Elton Arandale, Ed Bland, William Campbell III, Arthur Cooper, Jamaal Matuka, and Schaffe Smith.
