One of the more dramatic road washouts I’ve ever seen. (Foothill Farm Lane in Pilot Mountain)

Pilot Mountain Rescue and EMS shared this over the weekend.

“The sudden and heavy rush of rain knocked out the culvert underneath the roadway, creating an approximate 30 ft drop off where the vehicle entered unbeknownst in the dark. The rescue team had to enter from the wood line in the images and walk downstream to access the patient and bring them to safety.”

1.17 inches of rain just after midnight today at Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) now has the monthly total at 11.13 and 4th wettest July on record.. We are just 1.23 from equaling the wettest July on record..

Here's an updated list of how many times it has reached 100 degrees so far in 2026 at selected longer term weather stations. So far Fayetteville, NC has the top honors.

The 4 days of 100 degrees at the Atlantic City Int'l Airport near Pomona, NJ ties with 2011 for the most such days in a year since 1943. It also sets an all-time record for the month of July and any month of the year. The prior July record for triple digit highs was 3 days in 1966 & 2011.
