For the first time ever, Hoos Connected is offering a 3-week, intensive clinical internship. We are seeking motivated and compassionate psychology majors to join us this July at the University of Virginia.

What does the internship entail?
This internship is different from any training opportunity Hoos Connected has offered before. In three short weeks, you’ll:
- Learn everything you’ll need to be ready to facilitate a group of your own in the Fall ‘22 semester
- Work closely with program creators in a highly personal and interactive environment alongside a small group of other dedicated students
- Gain invaluable interpersonal and leadership skills and gain a greater understanding of the field of clinical psychology

Here’s what you need to know:
- When: July 11th - July 29th
Meets on weekdays from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
- Where: In-person at UVA
- Led by: Dr. Alison Nagel ([email protected])

How do I apply?
To apply, send your resume, unofficial transcript, and a paragraph about why you are interested in facilitating with Hoos Connected to [email protected] by June 1st. We will then hold interviews and release decisions by June 13th.

Accepted students must be able to enroll in PSYC 3991 in the Fall of 2022, which means being available to facilitate a Hoos Connected group on either Monday or Tuesday evenings (5:30-6:45 pm) and participate in weekly group supervision (Thursdays 11:30 am -12:45 pm or Thursdays 1:30-2:45 pm)-

Who are we?

What is Hoos Connected?

Hoos Connected is a program that brings together groups of First Year and/or transfer students to get to know one another while discussing the key components of making meaningful connections. Led by two trained facilitators, groups of 6-12 students engage in activities and dialogue that highlights what brings us together, what can keep us apart, and how these things manifest in UVa’s social culture. In a nutshell, there’s free food, fun games, and good conversation.

Your group will meet once a week for 75 minutes for 9 weeks. Your facilitators (usually an upperclassman & a graduate student) will steer your group through conversations that go beneath the surface level.

What’s great about Hoos Connected is it’s so easy – this is one of the few activities on grounds that doesn’t require any application to join because everyone is welcome. You won’t even need to prepare anything before each meeting. Just show up, eat the free food that will always be there, and have cool conversations with your peers as a quick study break during your week.

If you participate in Hoos Connected, you’ll be eligible to fill out up to 3 surveys for $20 each - providing your feedback on these surveys will help us determine areas where we can improve! You’ll also be eligible to serve as a facilitator for groups of future first years! A solid way to give back to the UVa community AND add leadership experience to your resume.

Are you an upperclassman and interested in getting involved?

Apply to be a facilitator! We are looking for caring, motivated, 2nd & 3rd year students interested in learning how to lead groups of First Years in our program, Hoos Connected. No prior experience in Hoos Connected is required!

Facilitators would receive one semester of training before being eligible to co-facilitate groups the following semester (2-course credits in Psychology research will be given at the end of the second semester), with weekly supervision provided by trained clinicians. Facilitators would learn invaluable skills in leadership and management of group dynamics. Applicants must be able to make a 2-semester commitment at this time.

Total time commitment: 3-4 hours/week
