Her roots date back to Howard University, Washington, D.C., where the idea for formation was conceived by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle of St. After her incorporation as a perpetual body in 1913, Alpha Kappa Alpha gradually branched out and became the channel through which selected college-trained women improved the socioeconomic conditions in their city, state, nation, and the world. Ask a Sister what sisterhood looks like, and the answers sound a lot like this.

Love. Support. Concern. Showing up. Knowing you have somewhere—and someone—to call home. This is how Sisterhood Shows Up.

Mental. Health. Matters.

On World Mental Health Day, we’re making space for something simple: checking in.

Check in with yourself. Check in with a friend. Check in with a Sister. Sometimes being present, listening, and asking “How are you really doing?” is enough to open the door.

Take care of your mind, too. 💗💚

Sisterhood Shows Up for Action!

At our 2026 Chapter Retreat, members put pen to postcard for a purpose. Through a civic-engagement initiative led by the Connection and Social Action Committee, 200 postcards were completed and mailed to voters in Michigan, encouraging citizens to register to vote and check their voter registration status.

Today, October 6, is the last day for regular voter registration in Illinois (in person through an election authority or by mail/paper application, which must be postmarked by today).

Beginning October 7, grace-period registration and voting begins at election-authority offices and other designated locations.

Online voter registration remains open through October 18.

This is how Sisterhood Shows Up — for Awareness. Advocacy. Action.
