Not having a dedicated special teams coordinator is one of the dumbest moves a head coach can make.

As a kicker or a punter, if you do have a choice, and you want to be successful kicking in college, stay away from these types of programs.

ST coordinator responsibilities are shared among other coaches. Usually it becomes low on their priority list, being something else that they have to address in addition to their primary roll - as a position coach or a coordinator.

In college, I was a kicker and a punter. My punt team coach was offensive coordinator, my PAT/FG coach was O-line coach, and kickoff coach was D-line coach (I think..or maybe he just counted players and told us to run down).

In other words, this arrangement is a sh*t show.

Young kickers have an amazing opportunity to make huge leaps in performance!

1. You are growing physically
2. You easily get stronger
3. You are maturing mentally and improving focus
4. You are improving your beginner level kicking skills

It is all there for the taking for kickers who want it. Keep filling all 4 buckets at the same time and performance soars.

A 20-year old kicker has to put in a year of intense work to see some incremental improvement of couple yards or percentage points of accuracy. That takes a lot of belief and grind.

A young kicker can add 10 yards or more in a year with consistent and moderate time and effort investment.

Punting is a complex skill that is a sequence of sub skills executed well. Without proper grip and arm positioning, odds of drop being good or in a right spot are slim to none.

First sub skill any punter should master is catching the snap cleanly, finding the grip, and positioning it over the kicking leg with arm extended (not locked elbow or tense forearm) and forearm parallel to the ground and pointing down the field.
