The Alpha Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta is deeply saddened by the recent offensive behavior of one of our members at The Fluttering Duck. We acknowledge the impact her actions have had on the DePauw community, and we are actively addressing these issues internally and holding our members accountable for their conduct.
As an international organization, Kappa Alpha Theta opposes racism, bigotry, and discriminatory behavior or actions. As a chapter, we support safe and inclusive spaces for all students. As members of the DePauw community, we recognize that our actions have consequences and that it is our responsibility to help create a supportive campus environment.
We strive to serve as allies and advocates for marginalized student populations, and we are committed to educating every member of Alpha Chapter on what it means to effectively fill these roles. Our philanthropy event, Kick it for CASA—scheduled for this Thursday, April 19—is cancelled. This will allow all chapter members to attend a workshop on diversity and inclusion facilitated by a campus professional.
We understand that this workshop is a first step, not a solution. We look forward to working toward a solution with DePauw’s administrators and other student organizations.
