Edgar Corona, an alumnus of the Harvey Mudd College Upward Bound program, has been named a recipient of the 2026 National TRIO Achiever Award, one of the highest honors bestowed by the Council for Opportunity in Education. The award recognizes outstanding alumni of Federal TRIO Programs who have overcome adversity to achieve exceptional professional success and make significant contributions to their communities.

Corona credits the HMC Upward Bound program with laying the groundwork for his achievements by providing the mentorship, academic preparation and professional networks necessary to launch his career, noting, “Upward Bound set the critical foundation and became the catalyst for what came afterward.”

A team of Harvey Mudd College students has developed a multiplayer strategy video game designed to teach players about cropland repurposing in California's Central Valley. The game, “Common Ground,” was completed through Harvey Mudd's Clinic Program in partnership with the Union of Concerned Scientists, which publicly released the game on its website in September.

Team members Laura Vairus ’26, Nicole Kerschner ’26, Vibhu Krishnan ’26, Mia Mirabelli ’26 and Ria Rajasekar ’26 worked with their advisor HMC climate and computer science professor Lynn Kirabo over the 2025–2026 academic year to translate cropland-transition science into game mechanics.

CMS Football running back and Harvey Mudd engineering major Cooper Nixon ’27 ( #11) scored the only touchdown in CMS Football's Sixth Street 22-10 victory over the Sagehens. Nixon's touchdown in the first quarter solidified an early lead over Pomona-Pitzer. Sean Lee CMC ’29 sealed the deal and broke a CMS Athletics record of most field goals in a single game. Congratulations to the entire Stags Football team for bringing the Sixth Street trophy back to CMS.

Elle Marsyla ’26 received Chi Alpha Sigma's 2025-2026 Scholar Athlete of the Year Award. On Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m., HMC mathematics professor Art Benjamin will uncover the mathematics behind games of chance and games of skill, showing how probability, strategy and optimal wagering can dramatically tilt the odds in your favor. Benjamin will discuss his new book, “How to Win: A Mathematical Approach to Games and Puzzles,” and share insight on startling paradoxes, surprising twists and games that you almost always win if you know the mathematical secret.

Moving up two places from last year, Harvey Mudd College is ranked No. 8 among national liberal arts colleges in the Best Colleges 2027 list from U.S. News and World Report. The rankings are based on a range of factors, including graduation and retention rates, graduate outcomes, peer assessment, financial resources, faculty resources, standardized test scores and research citations.

The College also ranked No. 7 for Top Private Colleges and tied for No. 7 for Most Innovative Schools. Harvey Mudd's undergraduate engineering program tied for No. 2 among non-doctorate-granting institutions and was recognized in the top 10 for four different specialities.

Harvey Mudd College mathematics professor and McGregor-Girand Chair in STEM Equity Innovation and Research Darryl Yong has been appointed executive director of Math for America Los Angeles.

“I’ve been so inspired by the math and computer science teachers supported by our program and all the amazing work they do to bring about more equitable and ambitious student learning outcomes,” Yong says. “I genuinely look forward to learning from and fellowshipping with this warm and caring community of teacher-leaders.”

Under Yong’s directorship this coming year, the organization plans to expand its fellowship program to more schools and build infrastructure for data-gathering and research to inform public education policy. Read more on our news page at https://uqr.to/yong-mfala.
