We are part of the Psychology and Chicana/o - Latina/o Studies Departments at Pomona College, and led by Professor Guadalupe Bacio. Meet CENTRO lab research assistant Mya! Mya is a first-generation, low-income student from Chicago, Illinois. She is planning on majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in computer science. She is dedicated to helping her community by increasing health awareness and health security. She is currently involved in Health bridges resources pods, where she is working to expand health access across the Pomona community. Her personal connection to the undocumented community and its many stressors has inspired her to look at ways she can serve as an agent of change. With the research skills gained from the CENTRO lab, Mya hopes become a public health advocate or doctor to assist underrepresented populations. In her free time, she loves to paint, and listen to music.

Conoce a la asistente de investigación en CENTRO Mya! Mya es una estudiante de bajos ingresos de primera generación de Chicago, Illinois. Mya planea especializarse en Neurociencia y en informática. Ella se dedica a ayudar a su comunidad brindando conciencia sobre la salud y seguridad de la salud. Actualmente participa en los módulos de recursos de puentes de salud, donde está trabajando para expandir el acceso a la salud a toda la comunidad de Pomona. Su conexión personal con la comunidad indocumentada y sus muchos factores estresantes la ha inspirado a buscar formas en que pueda servir como agente de cambio. Con las habilidades de investigación adquiridas en el laboratorio de CENTRO, Mya espera convertirse en una defensora de la salud pública o médica para ayudar a las poblaciones subrepresentadas. Meet CENTRO Lab Research Assistant: Emily. Emily is from Chicago, and is majoring in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) with a minor in Chicane, Latine Studies at Pomona College. She identifies as FLI (first generation, low-income) and Chicana. In her free time, you can find her working out at the CMC gym, working at the Coop Fountain, or studying at the library. She joined CENTRO with the intent of identifying factors that cause disparities for the Latine community to then help bridge the gap in many facts of life. In the future, she hopes to work in law or government to facilitate the transparent representation of the Latine community.

Conoce a la asistente de investigación del laboratorio CENTRO: Emily. Emily es de Chicago y se está especializando en Filosofía, Política y Economía con especialización en Chicane, Latine Estudios en Pomona College. Ella se identifica como FLI (primera generación, de bajos recursos) y Chicana. Meet Centro lab assistant: Isabel! Isabel identifies as a FLI(First Generation Low-Income) student from Washington, DC and she is majoring in Chican(o/a/x) Latin(o/a/x) Studies at Pomona College. She is proudly honduran and comes from a beautiful barrio of central americans. In her free time, Isabel enjoys playing with her cat (pato), drinking tea, napping, etc. She is interested in working in CENTRO Lab for many reasons — to better build public understanding of the Latinx community, to demystify higher education for young Latinxs, and to understand her own familial experiences with mental health challenges and substance abuse. After graduation, she hope to become an early childhood bilingual educator and artist.

Ella es de Washington, DC y se especializa en estudios chican(o/a/x) latin(o/a/x) en Pomona College. Ella es orgullosamente hondureña y proviene de un hermoso barrio centroamericano. En su tiempo libre, a Isabel le gusta jugar con su gato (Pato), tomar té, tomar una siesta, etc. Está interesada en trabajar en CENTRO Lab por muchas razones: para desarrollar una mejor comprensión pública de la comunidad Latinx, para desmitificar la educación universiatra para jóvenes Latinxs, y comprender sus propias experiencias familiares con la salud mental y abuso de sustancias. Después de recibirse, espera convertirse en una artista y educadora bilingüe infantil.

Meet lab member Chrisbet! Chrisbet is from Redwood City, California and is majoring in Peace and Conflicts and Educational Studies with a minor in Spanish at Swarthmore College. She is a FLI college student doing a domestic exchange at Pomona College this fall 2021 semester. In her time here she has taken classes with the CLSA department, one of them an inside-out course, where she got more perspective about the Latinx population incarcerated in California. In the future she hopes to provide legal services and resources to those that are incarcerated and formerly incarcerated. She joined CENTRO to continue learning about the different factors that uniquely impact Latinx communities and work towards creating solutions and healing services. She is also a part of Jumpstart and enjoys working with kids and teaching. In her free time you can find her laying in the grass sun bathing, taking pictures of plants and flowers, and spending time with her loved ones.

Chrisbet es de Redwood City, California y se especializa en Paz y Conflictos y Estudios Educativos con una especialización en español en Swarthmore College. Ella es una estudiante universitaria de FLI que realiza un intercambio doméstico en Pomona College este semestre de otoño de 2021. En su tiempo aquí ha tomado clases con el departamento de CLSA, una de ellas un curso de adentro hacia afuera, donde obtuvo más perspectiva sobre la población latinx encarcelada en California. En el futuro, espera brindar servicios y recursos legales a aquellos que están encarcelados y anteriormente encarcelados. Específicamente, aquellos que hablan español y también se ven afectados por el sistema de inmigración. Se unió a CENTRO para continuar aprendiendo sobre los diferentes factores que impactan de manera única a las comunidades latinx y trabajar para crear soluciones y servicios de curación. Ella también es parte de Jumpstart y disfruta trabajar con niños y enseñar. En su tiempo libre puedes encontrarla tumbada en la hierba tomando el sol, tomando fotografías de plantas y flores y pasando tiempo con sus seres queridos.

Meet Lab Assistant Anna Teske (Scripps '22)! Anna is from Los Altos, California and is studying Molecular Biology at Scripps College. They are passionate about healthcare equity and are an advocate for safer s*x education in the q***r community. Anna is excited to join the CENTRO Lab and assist in producing valuable research. After graduation, Anna hopes to become a pharmacist and work with Latinx communities. In their free time, Anna loves ballroom dancing, writing limericks, and playing Dungeons and Dragons.
