Inspiring the Next Generation of Healthcare Heroes!
The Gamma Eta Eta Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.Was thrilled to participate in the Career Expo at Roseboro-Salemburg Middle School this past Friday, April 24th.
Sorors Phyllis Carter Goodman and Mary Goodman spent the day engaging with energetic 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students, sharing the incredible journey of becoming a nurse. It was a wonderful opportunity to shine a light on what we believe is the most honorable profession in the world!
Mapping the Pathway to Nursing

During the expo, our Sorors walked students through the essential steps to enter the nursing field, emphasizing the following.

Academic Excellence:
The importance of focusing on science and math early on.

Educational Tracks:
Exploring the different routes, from Associate and Bachelor degrees to advanced doctoral studies.

The Heart of Nursing:
Sharing personal stories of patient care, advocacy, and community service.

A Commitment to Mentorship
For Gamma Eta Eta, service doesn't just happen in the clinic—it happens in the classroom. By meeting these students where they are, we hope to plant the seeds for a future generation of compassionate, highly-skilled nursing professionals who will one day lead our healthcare systems.

A huge thank you to the staff at Roseboro-Salemburg Middle School for inviting us to be a part of such a dynamic event. We left feeling inspired by the curiosity and potential of these bright young minds!

Honoring the Journey: The 2026 Widows Gathering Services

This past week, the campus of Mt. Olive College in Mt. Olive, N.C., became a sanctuary of healing and empowerment.
The 2026 Widows Gathering Services brought together women from all walks of life to honor their past, acknowledge their present, and equip them for a future defined by Power and Strength.

Hosted by the visionaries Dr. Barbara Lee and Kent Lee of *Word of Truth Outreach Ministry* and *Kingdom Work Force*, the event was a masterclass in intentionality. Every detail was designed to undergird these women as they navigate the complexities of their "New Season."

Empowerment Through Education & Testimony:

The gathering focused on providing practical, emotional, and spiritual tools to help widows transition from grief to resilience.

Mental Health as a Foundation:
Our very own Mary L. Goodman, MSN, APRN PMHNP-BC—a distinguished member of the Gamma Eta Eta Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.—took the stage to educate attendees on the mental health aspects of loss. Mary empowered the women with essential tools to navigate the psychological shifts of widowhood, reminding everyone that mental wellness is a vital component of strength.

The Power of Shared Experience:
Guest speaker Lynn Cox moved the room with a raw and empowering testimony of her own journey. By sharing her personal story of suddenly becoming a widow, she provided a mirror for many in the audience, proving that while the path is difficult, it is possible to walk it with grace and courage.

A Community of Support:
The intentionality shown by **Word of Truth Outreach Ministry** and **Kingdom Work Force** ensured that no woman left feeling alone. By fostering an environment of "undergirding," the organizers created a space where vulnerability was met with support and fear was met with faith.

"Widowhood is not the end of the story; it is the beginning of a New Season of Power."

Strengthening Our Roots: Community Baby Shower in Warsaw, N.C.

It was a beautiful day of service and sisterhood in Warsaw, N.C. as the Gamma Eta Eta Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.participated as an educational vendor for the local Community Baby Shower.

As nursing professionals, our mission is to meet our community where they are, and there was no better place to be than supporting new and expectant mothers as they prepare for the journey of parenthood.

Heart Health & Education
Our chapter focused on a critical pillar of maternal wellness: **cardiovascular health**. Throughout the event, we provided:

Live Blood Pressure Monitoring:
Offering immediate screenings for attendees.

Educational Outreach:
Distributing vital information on the "silent" signs of hypertension and the importance of monitoring blood pressure before, during, and after pregnancy.

Supporting New Mothers
In addition to clinical education, we were thrilled to provide tangible support for our local families. Gamma Eta Eta was proud to donate 2 cases of diapers to help ease the transition for new mothers as they welcome their little ones home.

Being the Voice for Maternal Health Equity
The highlight of the event was the powerful dialogue regarding **Maternal Health Disparities among African American women**. We heard from multiple guest speakers who highlighted a sobering reality: the maternal mortality rate for Black women remains disproportionately high.
While the concern expressed by the community was great, the message was clear—we cannot stop here.

"We must continue to **Be The Voice** for our underserved populations, ensuring that every mother receives the advocacy, respect, and high-quality care she deserves."

Thank you to everyone who organized and attended this impactful event. Together, we are building a healthier, more equitable future for the families of North Carolina.

Empowering Our Communities: An Evening with VITAS Healthcare

It was an honor to host Diane Deese Vice President of Community Affairs for VITAS Healthcare for an incredibly moving and informed presentation on the state of hospice care in North Carolina. Her insights shed a much-needed light on the disparities in end-of-life care, particularly within our underserved communities.

The Vital Need for Hospice Advocacy
Hospice care is about more than medical intervention; it is about dignity, comfort, and ensuring that every individual—regardless of their zip code or background—has access to compassionate end-of-life support. Diane emphasized that many in our marginalized populations remain unaware of the full scope of benefits provided by hospice, often leading to delayed care and unnecessary suffering.

How We Can Make a Difference
As a **Professional Nursing Organization**, we are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between healthcare systems and the communities we serve. Here is how we can assist VITAS in meeting this critical need:

Education & Outreach:
Utilizing our platforms to dispel myths about hospice and palliative care within the community.

Cultural Competency:
Partnering with VITAS to ensure that care delivery is culturally sensitive and respects the diverse traditions of North Carolina families.

Advocacy:
Speaking up for policy changes and resource allocation that prioritize healthcare equity.

Referral & Support:
Identifying patients and families who could benefit from early hospice intervention and connecting them with the right resources.

By standing together with organizations like VITAS, we can ensure that "care" truly means everyone. Let’s continue to lead the way in health equity and advocacy for all North Carolinians.
