It’s hard to ignore the difference: You can fill a car tank of gas in mere minutes. Charging the battery of an electric vehicle (EV) can take 30 minutes or more.

Chunsheng Wang, a Distinguished University Professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, and his team are working to quicken that time—a critical step toward shifting from the dominance of fossil fuel-powered vehicles to cleaner, more efficient electric ones.

“If you want to compete with the gasoline engine, you have to have a similar charge time for the battery,” Wang says.

Students in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Laboratory class visited the Fermentation Science Laboratory at the College of Agriculture & Natural Resources - University of Maryland for two weeks to produce three batches of sugar wash distilled under three different methods: simple pot distillation, four-plate and eight-plate fractional distillation columns.

These three scenarios allowed for the students to compare various aspects of modern beverage alcohol distillation, with principles that also apply to the production of fuel ethanol as well as how distillation is used in the petrochemical industry and elsewhere.

Christopher Johnson, a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, received the American Chemical Society's Leadership in Mentoring award, part of their 2026 Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Scholar Recognition Program.

“This award has meant the world to me; I've enjoyed my time at the University of Maryland so much over the past year, especially as I have watched mentees go on to do wonderful work at research laboratories and industrial positions,” he said.
