Event Summary:
"This event will examine how settler colonialism permanently altered Indigenous food systems and food sovereignty across tribal communities in the United States. Furthermore, we will analyze how settler colonialism influenced anti-Indigenous shifts in policy, the dispossession of Native land, and compromising cultural practices. We will confront the colonial narratives of Thanksgiving by giving voice to Indigenous narratives, which have historically been suppressed. We will showcase how Indigenous communities are working to revitalize their food systems, providing food security in tribes, and their advocacy efforts regarding food sovereignty. It is important to note that while we are focusing on Native experiences in the U.S., food is being used as a mechanism of control to exercise imperial power globally. This is an inhumane act orchestrated by settler colonialism which is still unfolding today. Discussion led by graduate students Kianna L. Big Crow and Vy Thompson."

Last Sunday, Indigenous at UMD had the incredible opportunity to table at Howard County Pride in Columbia, MD! We joined this event as a way to stand in solidarity with Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer folks as well as the broader 2SLGBTQ+ community. We also had the honor of being present for the land acknowledgement in stage where I also shared some info about our organization. Overall, this was so much fun! We met and talked to a lot of wonderful people who thought the stickers, zines, and buttons (and the wooden leaves that we used as table decor lol) were really cool. The kids really enjoyed the candy and making their own buttons. In times like this, we must continue to support one another and practice community. Thank you to Howard County Pride for your support and hosting us! 🪶🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🤍

Also, thank you to the folks who took the time to make this possible! I am very grateful for your help, you all did an incredible job! 🫶

I hope everyone had a wonderful Indigenous Peoples Day, I know we did! Yesterday, we had the most incredible opportunity to attend a discussion with Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs and Dr. Elizabeth Rule at American University! This was such an insightful and fun event! It was so nice getting to socialize and laugh with them after the talk. I also gave the both of them some Indigenous at UMD merch, stickers and pins (lol). If you haven't already, go check out K. Devery's work and read Dr. Rule's book "Indigenous DC". 🧡🪶
