1 day until FDOC!

ASCE Concrete Canoe at UMD is a student-led competition team where participants gain the opportunity to design, create, and race a canoe made entirely of specially batched lightweight concrete. From calculating and modelling to balance speed and maneuverability, to performing concrete mix design to balance buoyancy and durability, everyone works as a team to present the best canoe and fulfill the RFP requirements presented by the judges. There is plenty of work to be done and much to learn!

Last year, we placed 3rd overall in the new combined Mid-Atlantic ASCE division and have a long history of placing in the top of the rankings, spanning more than a decade.

By joining Concrete Canoe, students can learn to batch, place, and cure concrete, gain experience in 3D design and CAD/CAM, apply structural analysis principles to real-life scenarios, gain skills in construction and aesthetic design, and learn leadership, teamwork, and time management skills, all while contributing to the creation of our final product-- a 20ft canoe made of concrete!

2 days until FDOC!

Do YOU want to learn how to design and model a bridge? Want to work and fabricate with steel? Join UMD Steel Bridge!

By joining, you get to design and fabricate a scale model bridge ( ~20ft) out of steel to compete against other schools! Learn how to cut, grind, and weld steel as well as understand the engineering design process. Develop a network of friends and future professionals, and open to all majors. No prior knowledge or experience necessary!

We meet every week, all week, but members attend at their convenience. Our first GBM tends to be soon after the first ASCE GBM. Follow our Instagram and join our GroupMe for updates!

3 days until FDOC!

Are YOU interested in land development and gaining relevant project experience for internships? Join Sustainable Solutions!!

The ASCE Sustainable Solutions Competition (SSC) challenges students to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to real-world civil engineering problems. It promotes creativity, multidisciplinary collaboration, and sustainable engineering practices, with an emphasis on integrating engineering and natural systems to benefit society.

For the 2025-2026 school year, we were tasked with creating a sustainable data center. Our team recently finished 2nd at the Mid-Atlantic symposium, and also received 1st as the fan-favorite for coolest cooling!! This was our first time competing, and we’re hoping to come back to symposium even stronger this year!!

Meetings will begin once the 2026-2027 project is announced!! To stay updated, make sure to follow our instagram and GroupMe :)

❗New competition opportunity❗

All students, who are currently enrolled in universities in the United States majoring in architecture/architectural engineering, civil engineering, and construction engineering/management, are invited to participate in a “three minutes” failure case study competition to win a free registration and travel expenses to the ASCE 11th Forensic Engineering Congress, in Orlando, FL on October 22–25, 2026. Students have three minutes to present one failure case study of a civil infrastructure or a building failure with three PowerPoint slides. The competition encourages participants’ communication skills through effectively presenting a failure case study in just three minutes.

Three finalists of the student competition will win free registrations for ASCE 11th Forensic Engineering Congress and will present their case studies to compete for cash prizes. Travel will be reimbursed through conference sponsorship including air fares and accommodations.

First Place: $600
Second Place: $450
Third Place: $300
