Alpha Epsilon Delta is the national health pre-professional honor society dedicated to the encouragement and recognition of excellence in pre-professional health scholarship. Here at the University of South Carolina Alpha Chapter, we hold bi-weekly meetings that feature guest speakers from major health fields including medical and dental specialists, healthcare administrators, and admissions direc

tors from local medical colleges. We offer opportunities for our members to volunteer and perform community service activities as well as providing a great social networking forum for students with common interests. As a pre-professional honor society, AED functions to enhance students' understanding of the medical/health/pharmacy/dental fields while striving to make them more competitive applicants for their respective professional schools.

☀️SUMMER SHOUTOUT☀️to Maggie, who spent her summer interning with a hospital group based out of Cincinnati, Ohio called Bon Secours Mercy Health. She worked with their clinical operations team, and earned a lot of experience in seeing how primary care is delivered. Maggie also assisted in creating pilot programs to reduce physician burnout, looked at ways to improve quality scores, and analyzed data to show how having psychologists and psychiatrists in primary care offices impacts health outcomes such as BP, BMI, HbA1C, LDL and PHQ9 scores.

After shadowing at some of Mercy’s school based health centers, Maggie decided that she wanted to start a side project this summer. Along with another intern, they challenged the office to see how many toothbrushes they could collect for Mercy‘s school based health clinics. By the end of the summer, they collected nearly 700 toothbrushes, packs of dental floss, and tubes of toothpaste! Way to go, Maggie!

☀️SUMMER SHOUTOUT☀️to Chris, who is currently studying abroad in Valencia, Spain for 8 weeks! During his time there, Chris has taken two 300-level Spanish courses and received an internship at a private hospital called the Hospital Quiron. The internship is part of his coursework and consists of shadowing pediatricians, ER physicians, and surgeons in order to gain a broad understanding of medicine. Chris's favorite area of the hospital is surgery by far. As you can see, Chris has just finished scrubbing in on a thyroidectomy, and he has gotten the opportunity to observe a meniscectomy, coronary artery bypass surgery, a laryngectomy, and much more. Proud of you, Chris!

☀️SUMMER SHOUTOUT ☀️to these AED members who have dedicated their summers to working at Rivers Edge Retreat. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Rivers Edge Retreat is one of AED’s affiliated non-profit service organizations.
This camp provides an outlet for underserved and disadvantaged children in the Midlands.

Children who experience adverse childhood experiences are at risk for future health issues. However, camps such as Rivers Edge Retreat provide an opportunity to strengthen and teach resilience, responsibility, respect, fellowship, leadership, and cooperation to these children, to help them overcome their adversity.

Happy Hump Day everyone!!

1.) If you are still in need of a SERVICE POINT, purchase a $10+ gift card to Target, Walmart, Amazon, etc. and bring it to Sarah Eustis at Thomas Cooper from now until noon!! This will help the staff at Palmetto Place purchase Christmas presents for all of the amazing kids over there.

2.) Today is the last day to save big on an Examkrackers course, so if you are interested, use the deals included on this picture to enroll!

Last night at chapter, we were able to collect $300 worth of gift cards to purchase Christmas presents for the kids over at Palmetto Place, raise $179 dollars for CMN/Dance Marathon, and collect items for the There is Hope foundation and Han’ Go! THANK YOU to our incredible members!!! If anyone wants to drop of a gift card for Palmetto Place and receive a service point, Sarah Eustis will be in the library this Wednesday from 9:30 AM until noon! Find her near Starbucks 🎅🏼🤶🏼🎄

Last night after chapter we held our mentor family reveal!! All of our mentees and mentors were so excited to finally meet one another and we are so glad that they will be able to lean on one another through their own USC pre-health journeys. By the looks of some of these awesome reveal signs, some of y’all are definitely right-brained! 🧠👩🏼‍🎨👨🏽‍🎨
