Herman Phillips could have left college to work in Hollywood.

But he decided to finish his degree at USC, including a thesis with the Honors College. That decision changed his life — and potentially the film industry itself.
Phillips’ thesis laid the groundwork for Cinaspe, a technology platform that modernizes scheduling for film and television productions. Now GM of Cinapse, Phillips says about 20 percent of global productions have been made using the software since 2025.

Last year, Cinapse merged with WrapBook, an entertainment payroll and financial technology company. Integrating the platforms will allow productions to see how scheduling affects the budget in real time.

“If we can make the best schedule and have greater visibility into all these things that are happening, we actually may be able to make more movies,” Phillips says.

Elizabeth Scott Moïse didn't think she’d graduate. She came to USC anyway — the Sumter native couldn't imagine being anywhere else.

But one professor saw her. Believed in her. Stoked a fire within the Charleston attorney that still burns today. That fire pushed her to become a partner in a law firm, help free a man from prison (who’s still thriving today) through her pro bono work, and serve on USC’s Board of Trustees.

She still has more to give her alma mater. Encouragement from a law professor gave her the boost she needed to earn her J.D. When that same professor called a few years later asking Scott to teach, she agreed. More than thirty years later, she’s still teaching. Still giving back. Still on fire for USC.

To see how the University of South Carolina School of Music has evolved under Dean Tayloe Harding, look no further than the Koger Center for the Arts.

As dean, Harding was at the helm when the school took over administration of the arts center in 2018. Since then, he and center director Nate Terracio have synergized on major improvements: upgraded facilities, expanded visual arts spaces, reinvigorated programming. These enhancements are a win for the community — something Harding strives for in each initiative he undertakes, including Spark: Music Leadership at Carolina and Music for the Common Good: Carolina’s Public Music Initiative. But they’ve also further elevated the school’s reputation for innovative leadership.

“Having the Koger Center as part of what we do has made an extraordinary difference,” Harding says. “There’s not a school of music in America that doesn’t covet the relationship that we have with them.”
