UCA Interns in our K-6, Middle Level, and Special Education programs recently completed specialized Rite Flight training led by Brenda Nahlen and in partnership with The Reading Center here in the College of Education at UCA. Developed by the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia & Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite for Children in Texas, Rite Flight is a powerful reading comprehension program designed for students in grades 1–8. It can be used with students individually, in small groups or in the whole classroom.

These interns are heading into their year-long residency this spring! Thanks to this training, they are entering their field placements better equipped to support all readers at all levels. They will carry this evidence-based toolkit directly into their local field placements, immediately impacting young readers and supporting their classroom mentor teachers from day one!

In Dr. Allison Freed’s (Department of Teaching and Learning) SCI 4314 Applications of Middle Level Science class, students learned about the Arkansas Outdoor Learning Initiative while working with Outdoor Learning Manager Derek Ratchford to collect data, explore the new teacher hub, and use technology to enhance science learning. Mr. Ratchford also brought a young alligator undergoing rehabilitation, allowing students to measure the reptile’s carbon dioxide output.

Match Day for our College of Education's second cohort was a success! We hosted over a dozen districts from the central Arkansas area and almost 50 residents!
These students dressed for success, brought one page resumes, and participated in mini-interviews with at least 10 of the districts during their morning Match Day. In the afternoon, residents returned to hear the Arkansas Teacher of the Year, Ms. Stephanie Williams, speak about her passion for teaching and the role teachers play in their students' lives. Immediately after her speech, residents were given their College of Education pin, taking the teacher's pledge to uphold the standards of the profession! Residents of cohort II will be in the field for the Spring and Fall 2027 semesters.

The Department of Elementary, Literacy and Special Education participated in the Career Fair as a recruiting event on UCA's campus and won Honorable Mention! Faculty provided games across all subject areas since elementary education teachers and special education teachers teach "ALL the things". Students rolled a die and then played either a phonics, handwriting, social studies or science game to win treats, stickers and prizes

Students in Dr. Stefanie Sorbet’s (Department of Elementary, Literacy, and Special Education) Positive Classroom Management class participated in Morning Meeting rehearsals as they practiced delivering their Morning Meeting planned lessons with one another as a way to practice instruction prior to teaching elementary students in their junior block field placement. These morning meeting lessons focus on social emotional skills tied to the Arkansas GUIDE for life, CASEL’s five competencies, and contain a greeting, sharing, activity, and morning message.
