CCU will host National Canadian Film Day next week, which will feature the film Beans by First Nations director, Tracey Deer (Mohawk). The film will then be shown at 1pm and 6pm on Wednesday, April 19 in the Coastal Theater in Lib Jackson Student Union and is free and open to all. ALSO, there will be a special event – a panel discussion with representatives from the SC Council of Chiefs before the 6pm showing. Please join us in the Allen Ballroom in the Singleton Building on Wednesday, April 19 beginning at 5pm (come earlier for a meet-n-greet! There will be snacks!), which is also open to everyone.

Here's the blurb about the film: “Beans takes place at the height of the 1990 Mohawk Resistance at Kanehsatà:ke (also known as the Oka Crisis), a 78 day standoff between indigenous land defenders, Quebec police, the RCMP, and the Canadian military over the proposed expansion of a golf course on to a Mohawk burial ground. Twelve-year-old Tekehentahkwa (nicknamed “Beans”) is forced into an early coming of age by these events, as her innocence turns to anger over the treatment of her people.”
