🎓 Thesis Defense Announcement 🦈🎣

After several years of research, data collection, and countless hours on the water, we are excited to announce Kyle’s M.S. thesis defense next Friday at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi: “Evaluating a Magnetic Shark Deterrent in Gulf of America Recreational Reef Fish Fisheries”

Kyle’s research evaluated the effectiveness of a magnetic shark deterrent as a potential non-lethal tool to reduce shark depredation in Gulf recreational fisheries while maintaining catch rates of targeted reef fish.

Please join us as MS student Katie defends her master’s thesis: “Estuarine Habitat Use of Sympatric Elasmobranchs on the Texas Coast”
 
Katie’s research uses acoustic telemetry to investigate how bonnetheads, spinner sharks, and cownose rays share and partition habitat within South Texas estuaries, providing new insights into the movement ecology of these three species.

We have been busy in the Movement Ecology Lab! 

Last week, PhD candidates Yamilla and Jasmine, along with PhD student Cali, wrapped up fieldwork tagging spotted seatrout for Yamilla’s dissertation. Together, they acoustically tagged 25 fish in just 3 days! 🎣

This week, weather kept us off the water, but not out of action. Yamilla and Cali participated in outreach at TAMUCC, where they connected with 52 middle school students and shared the exciting research happening in our lab!

Today is Endangered Species Day, a reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable wildlife and the ecosystems they depend on 🌎 🌊

Our lab has been fortunate to work with incredible species such as the Sandbar Shark and the Smalltooth Sawfish, both of which face ongoing conservation challenges due to habitat loss, bycatch, and indirect human impacts.

Research and conservation efforts play a major role in understanding the movement, behavior, and habitat use of these species. Data from this work inform the development of recovery strategies to rebuild fish stocks. Every field survey, tag deployment, and data point contributes to protecting these animals for future generations.

Being able to work with these species firsthand is a privilege and a reminder of why conservation research is so important. Protecting threatened and endangered marine life requires continued research, collaboration, and stewardship to help ensure these species remain part of our oceans for generations to come.

This week, our divers in the lab (including Dr. Coffey, Yamilla, Cali and Katie) retrieved and replaced one of our acoustic receiver stations while also getting some time in the water. These acoustic receiver stations support multiple projects in our lab, and retrieving the data requires us to go out and perform these swaps. Great job, team!! 👏🤿

This week our crew got out into the field to download our Aransas Bay acoustic receiver array! 🔊🐟

We had to get in the chilly water for a couple of receivers, but the trip was overall a success. We even made a few friends who hitched a ride onto the receiver stations as we pulled them aboard the boat to service them!

This receiver array is used to study the movement of tagged fish within the local bay system. With the data we collected, we can see where tagged fish go and whether they migrate into or out of the Gulf. This data will be used for both PhD student Jaz’s flounder project investigating the timing of southern flounder emigration into the Gulf, as well as MS student Katie’s project on shark and ray habitat use.
