We are continuing our series of highlighting Richland Community College alumni who are on the front lines helping to fight this Pandemic. Today, we share the story of Richland alumna, Gabrielle Sia.

Gabi grew up watching her dad endure Richland's intense nursing program. By seeing how many lives he was able to care for and touch, Gabi was inspired to follow in his footsteps and graduate from Richland Community College in 2018 with her AAS in Nursing.

The faculty and staff at Richland provided Gabi with an immersive experience in the world of nursing and prepared her to work in a critical care setting as an Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse at HSHS St. Mary's Hospital Decatur. Gabi chose her path to become a nurse so that she could develop the skills to care for and save people during their times of greatest need. Although Gabi never thought that she would have been cut out for the world critical care nursing, she’s now realized that she’s found her niche and we couldn’t be more #richlandproud.

Tosha’s experience at Richland is one that she will never forget. Her greatest accomplishment was not only graduating with her AAS in Nursing in 2019, but making the decision to attend Richland. Tosha never imagined she would be graduating from college 20 years after high school, but she learned to never give up and to purse her dreams, no matter how long it takes.

Although the pandemic has impacted her first few months in the workforce, Tosha is ready to take on her new role on the Intermediate Care Unit (IMC) at HSHS St. Mary's Hospital Decatur. She believes the front line workers will come out stronger and she is proud to be counted among them.

Thank you, Latosha, for making us #richlandproud.

Rachel is on the front lines of the pandemic at St. Mary’s Hospital working with a wide range of patients – from barely adults to the elderly. This experience has shown Rachel the true dedication of many healthcare staff who continue to come to work day after day knowing they may be exposed to a deadly virus. Rachel’s love of helping patients and being a positive force in their life is exactly why we are so #richlandproud.

We are continuing our series of highlighting Richland Community College alumni who are on the front lines helping to fight this Pandemic. Today, we share the story of Richland alumna, Molly Ploessl.

Molly was given a tour of an operating room thinking about becoming a nurse. This changed once she saw the person that was standing shoulder to shoulder with the surgeon, helping the surgeon by passing the instruments. This person was the Surgical Technologist and she knew immediately that that was the person I wanted to be. This led Molly to receive her AAS in Surgical Technology from Richland Community College in 2004.

Once Molly graduated from Richland, she was able to quickly get a job and take a national certification exam for the Surgical Technology profession. Molly is a Surgical Technologist in Labor & Delivery at Carle and she also returned to Richland Community College as an Adjunct Clinical Instructor and Surgical Technology Lab Facilitator.

Although this semester was not how Molly imagined, she has still made a significant impact on the next generation of Surgical Technologists and we couldn’t be more #richlandproud.

We are continuing our series of highlighting Richland Community College alumni who are on the front lines helping to fight this Pandemic. Today, we share the story of Richland alumna, Kim Jones, RN.

Kim received her Associate in Nursing from Richland Community College in 2011. Richland provided Kim with a top-level education, which prepared her for her role as a RN, Charge Nurse, and Preceptor for new nurses at Taylorville Memorial Hospital.

Kim’s goal in becoming a nurse is to try to make a small difference in every patient’s life. Sometimes the smallest gesture, like taking the time to sit and comfort the patient, is what they will remember. With COVID-19 patients not being able to have family visitation, these small gestures are making a huge impact on the lives of her patients.

Thank you, Kim, for making us #richlandproud.

We are continuing our series of highlighting Richland Community College alumni who are on the front lines helping to fight this Pandemic. Today, we share the story of Richland alumna, Beth Roach.

Beth graduated from Richland Community College with an AAS in Radiography in 2010. Following graduation, she has enjoyed the best of both worlds – previously working as a Radiographer at a local hospital and now serving as Adjust Instructor Radiography and Radiography Lab Facilitator at Richland Community College.

Beth has always loved working with and helping people. She is using her experience and education to ensure that Richland students have the information and resources they need to be successful in the Radiography program, even in an online setting. We are continuing our series of highlighting Richland Community College alumni who are on the front lines helping to fight this Pandemic. Today, we share the story of Richland alumni, Jeffrey Mason-Wells.

Jeffrey originally started at Richland as an EMT student. While completing the EMT-B and EMT-I classes, Jeffrey did hours of clinical in the ER’s throughout Decatur. During this time, he realized that he wanted to be doing what the nurses were doing, so he transitioned his educational path and graduated with an Associate Degree in Nursing in 2015.

Prior to leaving Richland, Jeffrey suffered a great loss and was widowed. He was forced to create a new plan for life, as his previous goals were taken away in an instant. Jeffrey set new goals to become a travel nurse, and worked in this role for 2.5 years before leading him to his current role as an ER Nurse at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa California – one of the busiest ER’s in San Diego County. Richland prepared Jeffrey with great nursing skills, including time management and prioritization skills – skills that have been essential as he works on front lines treating potential COVID-19 patients.

Jeffrey has accomplished amazing personal and professional goals and we couldn’t be more #richlandproud.
