Theodore Roosevelt Center

Theodore Roosevelt Center Explore the life and achievement of the 26th President of the United States online, through photos, quotes from his writings, political cartoons, and more.
In 2007, Dickinson State University in Dickinson, North Dakota, created the Theodore Roosevelt Center (TRC) to make the university a critical site for Theodore Roosevelt studies in the United States. In addition to hosting an annual symposium, the TRC started the creation of a digital library to be the world's most comprehensive collection of Roosevelt's papers.

Roosevelt's friend Sir George Otto Trevelyan was born on this day in 1838. He was a historian and writer, civil servant, politician, and the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Here is an excerpt of a letter in our #digitallibrary where #EdithWharton writes about her love of Trevelyan's books on the American Revolution. Roosevelt, too, often put Trevelyan's books on his favorites list.

South Dakota Event Alert!

The Mount Roosevelt Friendship Tower was constructed in 1919 to honor a great friendship. Seth Bullock, the famous Deadwood sheriff, US Marshall, and Forest Supervisor, built the tower with the Society of Black Hills Pioneers as a memorial to President Theodore Roosevelt, his close friend and creator of the US Forest Service. Bullock also helped develop the Black Hills communities of Deadwood, Lead, Spearfish, and Belle Fourche.

July 4 marks the 100th anniversary of the dedication of Friendship Tower on Mt Roosevelt. The Official 100th Anniversary Ceremony will take place on July 6, and is to include local delegates, a presentation of colors, masonic cornerstone re-dedication and patriotic music. Parking is very limited, so we ask that everyone meet at the Deadwood Welcome Center for free trolley service to the trail head. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 6. Complimentary lunch will be served after the program. All are welcome to join in celebration of 100 years of Friendship Tower!

Did you know we're celebrating #NationalZooandAquariumMonth this June with items from our digital library? We found an ad receipt for the #NationalAquarium from 1905 in our archive deep dive, from our partners at the Library of Congress.
Although currently housed in #Baltimore the aquarium was previously located in Washington D.C. near the current Air and Space Museum site. Associated with the Bureau of Fisheries, it also served as a hatching station.
