Juneteenth commemorates the abolition of slavery - Freedom Day! On the historic day of June 19, 1865 last remaining state of the South’s Confederacy, Texas, announced the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were free (this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation). The Juneteenth celebration began as a time where freed slaves reassured each other, prayed and gathered with remaining family members. Today Juneteenth celebrations promote, cultivate knowledge and appreciation of African American history and culture.

NAMIC New England and the Rhode Island Black Film Festival (RIBFF) will mark the occasion with a virtual screening of PUSH OUT and a discussion with the Director on Juneteenth - June 19 at 5pm EST
