Meet Maurico Hernandez '27, who organized the 2025 Society of Professional Hispanic Engineers National Convention in Philadelphia. “My time helping organize the SHPE conference and seeing how the board came together was amazing. "

In recent years, SHPE has been reaching out beyond engineers to include students from other disciplines. "This expansion brought additional members from places like Economics to Computer Science to the retreat."

Mauricio notes the hard work involved in planning was worth it. "There were a lot of long nights planning, budgeting, and contacting the right people to get things in order; however, ultimately, we were all able to learn from employers, refine our professional next steps, and expand upon what we want to take from Lafayette. Huge shout-out to individuals who participated in SHPE, both alumni and those at the event, for such a memorable experience.”

Who says coding is just sitting behind a desk? 🐍🔍

Students in Prof. Biernacki’s Intro to Computer Programming class took their code on the move with a campus-wide scavenger hunt!

Here’s how they cracked the case:
💻 Wrote Python programs to solve custom calculations
🏫 Decoded the answers to navigate from one campus building to the next
🔐 Unlocked a final prize box using their calculated passcode

The sweetest part? Inside was a personalized reward featuring each student’s favorite candy, a detail Prof. Biernacki learned from their Day 1 survey! 🍬✨

Shoutout to Prof. Biernacki for making learning both interactive and sweet! 💯

Engineering meets music at Lafayette! 🎶🤖

What happens when a first-year engineering student collaborates with a guitarist? A custom, automated guitar designed to play on its own. Nurassyl Tursymbayev merged mechanical design, code, and hardware -- and his passion for electric guitar music -- to bring an idea to life.
