UCLA Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies

UCLA Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies The UCLA Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies is the leading research center for the study of Jewi Band, its two subsequent Directors, David N.

Leve Center for Jewish Studies is the leading research center for the study of Jewish culture and civilization in California and one of the largest and most active centers in the world. Its mandate is to serve the faculty members at UCLA and other local universities conducting research in Jewish Studies, UCLA undergraduate and graduate students, and the broader Los Angeles community, exposing all

to the riches of a great world culture, as well as to the values of diversity and tolerance that accompany its study. The Center sponsors nearly seventy courses a year in Jewish studies at UCLA, as well as some 50 lectures, symposia, and conferences on far-reaching topics in the field of Jewish studies (all of which are free and open to the general public). Through these activities, the Center aims to bring the past into conversation with the present—by adding historical depth to contemporary issues and contemporary relevance to historical study. In 1994 Provost Brian Copenhaver of the UCLA College of Letters and Science established the Center for Jewish Studies in the Humanities Division, under the administration and support of Dean Pauline Yu. Through the leadership of its founding director, Professor Arnold J. Myers and Kenneth Reinhard, and current Director Todd Presner, the Center has developed into an exceptionally productive scholarly resource with an impressive roster of faculty, a steady stream of distinguished visitors, and a world famous library collection.

Figueroa, Associate Professor and Associate Chair of Academic Studies in the Department of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: https://bit.ly/UCLA_April-29_Musical-Jerusalem

About the Talk:
In this lecture, Michael A. Figueroa from UNC-Chapel Hill will explore how musical renderings of Jerusalem have been critical to the formation of Israeli political consciousness and how the Israeli-Palestinian crisis’s territorial fixation on Jerusalem has been constructed, historically contingent, and subject to artistic intervention in modernity.

Thank you to this event's co-sponsors: the UCLA Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies, the UCLA Center for Near Eastern Studies, and the Lowell Milken Center for Music of American Jewish Experience.

RSVP for our April 17 on-campus lecture presented by Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller: https://bit.ly/UCLA_April-17_Zionism-for-the-Future

About the Talk:
The current antagonistic political climate has all but shut down any constructive engagement with Zionist ideology and its redemptive possibilities. By referencing a range of foundational texts promulgated by Zionist thinkers such as Ahad Ha’am, Martin Buber and, Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv(1935-46) Moshe Avigdor Amiel, Rabbi Seidler-Feller will attempt to frame a Zionism of values that has the potential to inspire a new generation. He will argue for reclaiming the spirit of the Zionist revolution that has been eclipsed by political interests and formulate an inclusive and principled Jewish national vision.

This event is co-sponsored by the UCLA Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies.
