🎮 What can a video game teach us about the justice system?

In Prisons and Prison Writing (ENGL/JUST F201X), you'll step into the realities of incarceration through Lil' Windows, an original video game developed at UAF that immerses players in the economic realities of incarceration—from the cost of a phone call or a postage stamp to the forms required to understand your own rights.

Alongside the game, you'll explore prison writing and archives, collaborate on creative-critical projects, and produce public media.

Fulfill a General Education requirement while exploring one of the most innovative courses at UAF. See the flyer for details and be sure to register before classes fill up!

What does domestic violence actually look like in real time?

At UAF, students in the Department of Justice had the opportunity to examine a nationally recognized case through a deeper lens, learning how warning signs of abuse can be missed and what future professionals can do differently.

This event brought together the Gabby Petito Foundation and local advocacy organizations to focus on prevention, risk assessment, and trauma-informed response.

For students preparing careers in law enforcement, advocacy, and public service, these lessons are critical.

⚖️ Interested in restorative justice? Join the conversation shaping its future in Alaska.

The 2026 Restorative Justice Symposium, “Navigating the Weeds of Restorative Justice Practice,” will bring together students, practitioners, community members and justice professionals from across the state for three afternoons of discussion and learning.

Hosted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Justice and the University of Alaska Anchorage School of Social Work, this free virtual symposium explores how restorative justice programs are developing across Alaska.

Sessions will examine real-world questions about restorative justice practice, including legal pathways into RJ programs, the role of facilitators and the lived experiences of people who have participated in restorative processes.

Students interested in justice careers, alternative dispute resolution, community justice and policy are especially encouraged to attend.

Tonight at UAF, Nichole Schmidt and Tara Petito — Gabby Petito’s mother and stepmother — will share their story and speak about recognizing the warning signs of domestic violence, understanding how unhealthy behaviors escalate and why early awareness matters.

Since Gabby’s death in a nationally known case of intimate partner violence, her family has focused on prevention and education — helping young people and families recognize red flags and speak up before abuse escalates.
