The members and officers of GMU Hillel wish to express our solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

We emphatically acknowledge that we do not have all the answers to such complex topics of racism, violence, bigotry, injustice, and hate, and therefore, we will not pretend to. We will not act as if it is our place to speak for the Black community or make decisions on its behalf.
We will fight for the rights of others because it is the right thing to do. Optical allyship only serves at the surface level, however, we are prepared to do the work necessary to actively support the Black community however we can as allies, not only today, but for the future.
Right now there are many uncertainties, but we do know that 1) we have growth to do, 2) we will continue to learn from and listen to the Black community, and 3) we will stand with the BLM movement for the long haul. It is not enough to solely acknowledge the systematic inequality and racism responsible for the deaths of Black Americans. We must act.
GMU Hillel unequivocally stands with ALL Black lives, including African American members of the LGBTQ+ community. We urge others to make donations to fundraisers and bail funds, sign petitions, and make calls demanding justice for the attacks on Black lives.

Please see this link for resources to sign petitions, donate to bail funds, educate, and much more:

Chag Sameach! Tonight is the first night of Shavuot, where we celebrate the first wheat harvest and the receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. This holiday is a great time to go outside and enjoy nature, eat as much dairy as your heart desires, and read the story of Ruth. We hope everyone enjoys their fantastic cheesecakes and fruit salads!

From our Executive Director- Na'ama Gold:
On the final day of #HillelGlobalGivingWeek I would like to shout out our seniors. As someone who used to be the girl below (many many years ago), I can tell you that college is not the best years of your life. It may be the most fun. It may be the most carefree. But the best years come when you are making the greatest impact on the world. At Mason Hillel we teach leadership, nurture a sense of community and strive to ensure that those best years are as meaningful as possible. Our work is more important now than ever. We are $1883 away from our goal and we need YOUR help. Please consider donating today at http://hillel.org/georgemasonuniversity and class of 2020 — go change the world!

#TBT to 2012! Our own Carly Epstein reflects alllll the way back from her Bat Mitzvah to being the current Student President at Mason Hillel!

"Judaism has always played an active role in my life and my identity. I’ve always known Judaism would play an active role in my life no matter where I ended up, I just knew I needed to find why it was important to me. Coming to college, I learned a lot about how much Judaism impacts me. To me, it means friendship and family, love and hope. I’ve learned a lot about how I can help others and about myself. Getting involved with Hillel helped me open up and gain a lot of the confidence I’ve been looking for. Judaism and Hillel have taught me a lot about being a strong leader and who I want to be one day. Judaism is a constant that will always remain in my life and I will continue to grow from it. Mason Hillel has given me gifts I can never repay, my best friends, amazing opportunities and lessons and memories I will cherish for years to come. When I look back on my time in Mason Hillel, I will always smile and remember how impactful my time has been. I am so grateful for everyone and everything Mason Hillel has given me!"

YOU can help to continue inspire students like Carly by giving to Hillel International #GlobalGivingWeek. You can make DOUBLE the IMPACT by donating here by May 8: https://hillel.tfaforms.net/231?camid=7011P000000XMgG&uid=ID134

Today is #ThrowbackThursday! Who doesn't love a good Bar/Bat MItzvah picture?! Our very own Chris Taylor shares about his experience growing with and embracing Judaism over the past years:

"In the beginning, Judaism for me was more like a community of cool people who liked to argue politics and solve the world’s problems. I wasn’t super interested in the religious aspect, I was more of a devout atheist. Recently though, I’ve started learning about how “solving the world’s problems” is actually a big part of our religion. For thousands of years, our religious texts have debated human rights, freedom of expression, protection for the poor and minorities. We had trial by jury long before Europe was doing trial by ordeal. How nice it is to be part of a community that’s interested in these things?"

You can now catch Chris making creating Prime D'var Torahs, helping the Jewish community in whatever way he can and making the best memes you've ever seen.

What's your #Tbt? Share any Bar/Bat Mitzvah, camp, freshman year- fun throwback with us!

Today is #GivingTuesdayNow- a day where hundreds of people around the world are giving to and supporting the causes they care most about! In honor of today, we're celebrating one of our newest Patriots, Emma Sameth!

“Hillel is important to me because it has given me a sense of community and been essential in fostering my Jewish identity. I’ve met so many amazing people and been given so many great opportunities because of Hillel. I’ve learned a lot about Judaism and how I can be more involved in other Jewish students' lives, which is really rewarding!"

We are honored to kick off our #HillelGlobalGivingWeek by celebrating one of Mason Hillel’s Healthcare Heroes — Jessica Serber. Jess graduated from GMU in 2019 with a bachelors of science in nursing and now works as a nurse on an acute care general medicine floor at the University of Virginia hospital.

“Working during COVID-19 has changed so much of how we do things. Putting on PPE before going into rooms, not slowing family members to visit, using telemedicine for the first time with patients. At times it is very tiring being in a patient room for extended amounts of time, not having the extra hands to help like you’re used to. Thankfully, I have great co-workers and management who support each other in any way possible”

We salute Jess and all the nurses, doctors, hospital staff and first responders for their acts of heroism and commitment to the Jewish value of pikuach nefesh – that human life is sacred. You can help ensure that even more students graduate each year inspired to become ethically engaged global citizens rooted in Jewish values with your gift to Mason Hillel in honor of these Hillel Healthcare Heroes. Any donation will be matched from now through May 8: http://hillel.org/georgemasonuniversity

Dear fellow Jews: May we be together in spirit tomorrow night while families across the globe participate in virtual passover seders, may we be together when the households that are usually full are quieter than last year. May we be together in spirit when the four questions go unanswered because children are unable to travel, may we be together in spirit when the afikomen remains unfound for the same reason. We all might be separated by distance, but we are all going through this together. Yom tov.

Hey everyone! Myself and a few other students are compiling a list of any incidents and experiences you felt were anti-semitic, discriminative and/or insincere against Jewish students at Mason. It could be a conversation you had with another student or RSO, something that a professor said, an inadequate effort of religious accommodation or anything that made you feel unwelcome or excluded. We will be sharing this with school officials to bring up changes and way to include and guarantee the Jewish community on our "diverse" campus. Please personally message me any comments/experiences. Feel free to share this message with Mason students who have experienced forms of anti-Semitism on campus. You can 100% stay anonymous if preferred. Please connect with my by midnight, tonight!
Hey everyone! Our friends, the GMU Bahá’í Club, have invited us to their first interfaith prayer gathering of the year! It will be tomorrow, Thursday the 12th, from 3:30-4:30 in East 134. Thank you so much for everyone that came and made this event a success. While you are finishing your long weekend, enjoy this amazing video that shows a glance of what we accomplish as leaders and future leaders of this community we call home.
Today is my birthday dedicated to united sports activities through George Mason University of Washington D.C
Something from my heart, before Shabbat, on Israel in the last week: Three big things happened in Israel in the last week. Opening of the American Embassy in Jerusalem, conflict with Palestinians on the Gaza border, and Winning the Eurovision for the first time is 20 years. As an Israeli myself, I would like to give you my perspective about recent events and why they are all important: Opening of the American Embassy in Jerusalem: Jerusalem has been the beating heart of the Jewish people for thousands of years. Therefore, Israeli Jews always saw Jerusalem as their capital, and as the heart of the country. When the strongest nation in the world choose to move its embassy to it, whether you agree or disagree to it, is an historical recognition of this connection, that we hope will allow other nations to follow. Gaza crises: In Judaism, a person is a whole world. Losing a person, especially a young child, is as we lost our whole world. In every conflict there aren't good and bad, and reality is too complicated for us to decide on right or wrong. As an IDF soldier myself, hearing voices from the border, I know the soldiers did the best they can do to prevent any death, as long they were to protect their country. Israel does not benefit from these deaths nor the Palestinians who live in Gaza. Who does? Once you can answer this question, you would know where you can put your energy to stop it. Eurovision win: For over 60 years countries compete in a semi-global song competition named "Eurovision" – sort of American idol but with countries representative, with over 50 countries compete every year (including Australia!). This year Israel won big time with the song "Toy" performed by Netta Barzilai. This win was sweet in particular because it came from the audience- people who loved the song and the singer, and witnessed once again the beauty and the talent of emerge from Israel. This is the Israel we bring to our George Mason University Hillel and encourage you to see: that Israel is first of all people, who want to do well and live peacefully, in the only Jewish country in the world. Sabbat Shalom
