Lt. Col. Vindman is most widely known for his testimony during the investigation and first impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump.

How many of us remember how moved we were when he spoke about doing the right thing and how his father did not need to worry about his son's safety?

During his presentation Lt. Col. Vindman will talk about service, teamwork, devotion, and other values that represent the best of Judaism, public service, and the military.

President Gregory Washington will introduce Lt. Col. Vindman, and Ann Ardis (Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences) and Charles Chavis (John Mitchell Jr. Program for History, Justice, and Race) will moderate the conversation.

There will be an opportunity for members of the audience to ask questions.

Please note that we are privileged to be able to interact with someone who taught us that one can be a mensch (gentleperson) and be an American hero. Please support this memorable event and the organizations that are sponsoring this opportunity for growth and education.

Organized by GMU's Judaic Studies Council, this event is sponsored by the Department of Religious Studies, the Mitchell Program, the Honors College, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, University Life, Mason Hillel, Chabad at GMU, GMU AEPi, Pozez JCC, and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington.

For more information about the Judaic Studies program and minor, please visit judaicstudies.gmu.edu.

Throwback Thursday! Here are some throwbacks to past Israel weeks 🙂

“During Israel week, we celebrated Good Deeds Day! We had the awesome opportunity to partner with other students from the DMV to work with Yachad, an organization that helps to rebuild homes. This was an incredible Mitzvah, and I’m so happy that I got to do it alongside with some of my Mason Hillel friends!” (2019)
“For Israel week, I got to use my background as a creative writing major to research and highlight 3 Israeli authors publishing in 3 different genres. It made me feel more connected to my Jewish identity and inspired me to write about my Jewish life for the first time.” (2020)

Today is Yom HaZikharon (Memorial Day) in Israel. Somewhat differently than how it is commemorated in the States, it is the saddest day of the Israeli national calendar, where the entire country stops for 24 hours to mourn their casualties and citizens who died in a war or in terror attacks. Coffee shops, stores, and any other entertainment venues are closed. TV only shows documentaries on the people who are no longer with us and the radio plays sad music, in Hebrew only. Each school (elementary, middle school, high school, etc.) has a ceremony, and the cemeteries are full of people who go visit their loved ones. Everyone in Israel knows someone who died, knows a story. Today, we remember all 23,928 of them. May their memory be a blessing. יהי זכר הנופלים ברוך.

Israel has become the leading nation in water recycling by reusing roughly 90% of the wastewater they create, which is almost 4 times higher than any other country. The majority of the water that is reused in Israel is for agricultural irrigation and other environmental purposes. Israelis have developed technology like the award-winning drip irrigation system and brought water conservation globally to communities that need it most. Through hard work and a sense of responsibility to the Earth and the environment, Israel has turned the desert into a place flowing with clean water.

We are pleased to announce that Rabbi Daniel Novick will be the next Mason Hillel Executive Director!

Daniel comes to Mason Hillel from our close neighbor: the Hillel at The George Washington University, where he is presently the Assistant Director. A graduate of the University of Virginia and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, Daniel brings a wealth of experience on campus and in the wider Jewish community. Prior to his time at GW, he created a new Jewish community for millennials living in San Francisco. At GW Hillel, Daniel managed and oversaw all aspects of Jewish life for the 3000 Jewish students. He helped design and pilot initiatives such as The Nuance Project, the DMV Hillel Pipeline Project, and the GW Hillel Summer Internship Program. As a professional Hillel executive and Rabbi - and a native of Herndon, Virginia - Daniel understands the opportunities and potential for Mason Hillel to reach our diverse demographic of students and to continue to build Mason Hillel into an even more active, engaging institution both for Mason students and other students and recent graduates living in Northern Virginia.

Daniel looks forward to meeting and building relationships with the many stakeholders who will be his partners in building a strong George Mason University Hillel. Though he will officially begin full-time in July, Daniel will be working on transition planning with the current staff and Board until then. Daniel plans to join the community to thank his predecessor, Na’ama Gold, at a Zoom event on Thursday, June 10 at 6 pm. Invitations to this event will be emailed soon.

Want to welcome Daniel personally? His new email is [email protected]

Seeing GMU Hillel supports Black Lives Matter, does that mean you also support BDS and are against Israel, which is a big part of their movement?
Dear fellow Jews: May we be together in spirit tomorrow night while families across the globe participate in virtual passover seders, may we be together when the households that are usually full are quieter than last year. May we be together in spirit when the four questions go unanswered because children are unable to travel, may we be together in spirit when the afikomen remains unfound for the same reason. We all might be separated by distance, but we are all going through this together. Yom tov.
