My heart is breaking for my students (more than 70% are graduating in the next 6 months). A great piece from David Yaffe-Bellany @nytimes points out the pain & challenges ahead:
“When the coronavirus pandemic forced college students across the country to leave campus in early March, the abrupt departure was especially painful for seniors. It meant rushed goodbyes, canceled graduation ceremonies — an overwhelming sense of loss.

Now, many of those seniors are home with their families, contemplating an even worse prospect: a job market more grim than any in recent history. Last week, according to the Labor Department, nearly 3.3 million people filed for unemployment benefits, more than quadruple the previous record.”

Further: “Historically, college students who graduate into a recession have settled for lower-paying jobs at less prestigious companies than people who finished college even a year earlier. Economists have found that the impact of that bad luck can linger for as long as 10 or 15 years, leading to higher unemployment rates and lower salaries — a phenomenon known as “scarring.”

Whether the class of 2020 will face long-term consequences depends on a range of factors, including the length of the pandemic and the severity of the recession that seems certain to follow. But it doesn’t look good.”
.
.
The article has more data, but my reworked syllabus includes many assignments that have students working on career readiness, industry outreach and skill acquisition. I’ve ever gone this far into career readiness and job search in a class - I teach entrepreneurship & small businesses for gosh sakes; that said these are not regular times (no on campus recruiting, career fairs, and hiring freezes). I have an obligation to our students to help them get where they want to be - no matter how challenging that task has become. It’s going to demand creativity from me and my colleagues at @ciemason @georgemasonbiz and @georgemasonu as well as resilience and huge efforts from the students /grads themselves

Our student venture program develops products, sells produxts and makes impact. 20 percent of gross revenue goes to combat food insecurity @georgemasonu
.
.
This kind of experiential learning in the real marketplace is what we need more of. From meeting vendors, developing products and pricing with profit and impact in mind and selling, marketing and more, this program @georgemasonbiz @ciemason is special and growing.
.
.
Let’s not forget, our student leaders and participants (more than 14 this semester) are directly helping other students in need & working with multiple new, local farms and businesses as they grow and develop their business models.
.
.
The Student Venture Program provides real world learning experience and on campus internship opportunities to our students. It is efficient and effective. They are also learning about challenges and opportunities in our food system - from production and packaging to marketing and sales.

1 in 4 Americans are eating less meat, but no real uptick in vegans or vegetarians. Sounds like many are plant-curious. Which is good news. Also, by far the number 1 reason is health, then later is environment and animal welfare. Thanks @gallup for this interesting survey
.
.
There are variations in the number of ‘meat cutters’ in different ‘segments’, but the trend is clear: people are exploring more plant based foods and meat alternatives.

Having #alumni speakers such #SumeetShrivastava of @arraytechinc talk with the 15 members of our student venture program, deepens the experience for our participants.
.
.
The Student Venture Program at @georgemasonbiz is open to all @georgemasonu students and has the participants operating a revenue generating organization on campus. The team develops products and services continually and sells many, sending 20% of revenues to campus and regional social and environmental #changemakers.
.
.
Sumeet spoke on the topic of working with friends and family and provided some amazing insights and lessons for all in attendance.
.
.
This program teaches a range of entrepreneurship skills (product development, HR, sales, marketing and more), professional skills and most importantly highlights the value of developing ventures that make an impact to many stakeholders as a normal course of operations while solving customer problems. Our participants see the benefits of cooperating and designing models for broader impact.

@beyondmeat v @impossible_foods taste test is one of my favorite days of the semester... Mason Food Innovators programs hosts this and people enjoy learning about the changes taking place in our food system. When we started this, Burger King was not an option... now many fast food restaurants offer impossible foods options. And Beyond Meat has had an insane run on the stock market.
.
.
Two dates to join @ciemason @georgemasonbiz as we explore and connect. All welcome.

Each semester I ask undergraduate entrepreneurship students which is their favorite innovative firm, product or entrepreneurs. Apple and #stevejobs have been leaders for years though no one names Jobs anymore (think about how insane that is)
.
.
Top 5 for Fall 2019
1. @apple
2. @spotify
3. @airbnb
4. @tesla / #elonmusk
5. @adidas (barely beat out @Nike)
.
.
5 fun insights - First, Apple has reigned supreme for years though Jobs hardly gets mentioned. Second, clear trends in terms of growing markets are represented by these firms (the next graphic will explore those. Third, many long lived firms (eg Nike, Disney, John Deere) are seen as innovative by students. Fourth, local firms received many votes, just not enough in aggregate to make the top 5. Lastly, few entrepreneurs were named - Elon, Richard Branson - while companies and brands dominated.

I’ve got an awesome summer reading list. Already into The Everything Store (about Bezos and the rise of @amazon) and Land of Desire by William Leach (covers the rise of consumer culture and retail in the US after 1880). Lots of similarities in the storylines. Both periods saw dramatic changes in how goods were merchandised and sold and how customers and retail were segmented. Wall Street, finance and corporate strategy seem to play a bigger role in our current economy, but the $AMZN book is written by a business reporter and Land of Desire penned by a historian
.
.
I am very excited to read Reader, Come Home: the Reading Brain in the Digital World by #maryannewolfe and The Good Neighbor: The Life and Work of Fred Rogers by #maxwellking / both of these works cover topics that are crucial in today’s society (long form reading, deep thinking, compassion, understanding and civility)
.
.
Also on the list: The Pioneers by David McCullough and Theodore Roosevelt for the Defense (@dan_abrams & #davidfisher) - always gotta get some history in there. TR rocks and I used a great deal of frontier theory in my dissertation on universities, startups and high growth founders (think Google, Dell, Nike, Under Armour, Grubhub and more)

Join us tomorrow at our half day conference for another great opportunity to hear inspiring and motivating speakers as well as a chance to network with experts and fellow entrepreneurs. Learn and ask questions about how to take the steps necessary to fulfill your dream business and how to navigate any obstacles that arise.

The four sponsors – Freedom Start Foundation, 30 Second Pitch, Joe ProBono, and George Mason University School of Business want to build upon the success of the first conference and provide an environment to nurture, enhance and support women entrepreneurs of any age at any stage. We strongly believe that it is never too late to start and are devoted to supporting entrepreneurs regardless of age, education or demographic. As WEC18 was so well received last November, this conference will continue to carry out our mission.

Looking forward to greeting you at #WEC19!
