The following will be a quick overview of last meeting to keep you informed on what’s going on, as well as what we expect to accomplish from next meeting.

Last meeting:

Design Build Fly (DBF).
You can download the rules at http://www.aiaadbf.org/DownloadDBFRules/

Concept design

The objective for this year is to design a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) and launch tube that minimizes system weight while maximizing speed, range, endurance and payload capacity.

4 missions (pg 11-13)

Ground mission
Demonstration flight
Speed flight
Range flight

What did we design so far?

The launch tube: A closed cylinder tube powered by a battery that will launch the UAV parallel to the ground.

The UAV: Our club logo will be there (definitely). We are highly considering a 2 wheel and 1 skid UAV, where it’s most likely to have better stability at the time of landing. We considered the possibility of making the wheels go inside the plane by a command while in flight to decrease drag, but we will need someone to program this function. We decided not to since it would take a lot of time. We also discussed the wing design: 4 winged top to bottom; and came with the idea of “what about reverse propeller orientation?”.

Quickly went over:

Preliminary Design
Manufacturing Plan

To keep in mind:

Session with Ann Morrell - Campus Manager at Raytheon (recruiting)
Thursday October 5 from 5-6:30 in Johnson Center 3rd floor room A

THERE WILL BE PIZZA - please come

Deadlines for Design Build Fly
First deadline (Proposal & Entry):
Opens: October 15th
Ends: October 31st

Next meeting:

We will collaborate with each other to share ideas, design the launch tube and UAV, plan, and have an strategy to succeed at this competition. The main objective is to enjoy, and keep ourselves motivated while creating and designing. Also having in mind the structure of the UAV; what will be designed and what will be purchased?

Sincerely, Melanie Yapura

20160829 Revised Activities

A revised activity list was much needed thanks to the size of the first, so here it is! Still working on shaping activities to appeal to everybody's interests though, so I would still call this tentative.

Hope you're all having a good first week back!

It turns out our current club name is too long for Mason's financial systems, so after talking with the RSO department, the new suggested name is 'Aerospace Engineering Club at Mason'. Any objections? Tomorrow the page's name and constitution will be changed to follow if there's no issue.

We've also officially been accepted to the VSE Ice Cream Social! The event's on September 8th from 2 to 4pm in the Atruim. Let me know if any of you guys are interested in participating!

One last thing: the registration process requires 8 of the member's G-numbers, so I'll be contacting you guys for permission to use them. The process ends September 9th, just 24 days away, so I'm putting this out early to expedite everything.

We've been invited to the VSE ice cream social! I'll make an event post once the details have been secured, but this is a great opportunity to showcase the club's plans and members.
