Mission: La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated was established on February 19, 1982 in order to address the shortcomings of academic institutions in meeting and addressing the needs of Latino students in higher education. Founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated primarily seeks to take a leadership role in meeting the needs of the Latino community through academic achievement, cultural awareness, community service, and promotion of the Latino culture and people. From its inception, La Unidad Latina has maintained a firm commitment to the empowerment and betterment of all Latinos. To accomplish this goal, La Fraternidad addresses various key areas of concern to the Latino community, beginning with a concentration on academic achievement, community service, and cultural awareness. Within the academic realm, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated continually strives to increase the representation of Latino faculty and students in higher education. Realizing that recruitment is only half of the solution, La Fraternidad places strong emphasis on academic programs that aid in the retention, guidance and improvement of Latino students in institutions of higher learning. La Unidad Latina is committed to developing its members and peers into mature, intelligent, socially active, and culturally conscious individuals, who, via mutual support, can excel academically and professionally. La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Incorporated is looking for individuals with vision, determination, pride, and a commitment to accomplish the goals it has set for itself. La Unidad Latina is a fraternal service organization aimed at uniting men in brotherhood in order to serve the Latino community. Our organization extends to the campuses of over 90 prominent undergraduate institutions including 63 undergraduate chapters and 14 professional/graduate chapters in 17 states. La Unidad Latina believes in a diverse membership, a commitment to academic excellence and a proactive vision towards raising awareness about the Latino culture and history.

Today we honor and celebrate the Indigenous People, the first to call the Americas their home. We honor their legacy and their continued resistance to modern-day colonization. We celebrate their heritage and remind ourselves of the cruel treatment received at the hands of colonizers. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #LaUnidadLatina #ΛΥΛ

YSMIW, a group made up of young activists from around Virginia, is launching the 3-day  #EssentialNotDisposableVA campaign to bring awareness to the exploitation and structural racism faced by Virginia’s agricultural workers, while also honoring their contribution to our agricultural ecosystems. Food supply workers  — mostly BIPOC, undocumented and seasonal migrant workers — have been one of the hardest hit workforces during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is no surprise in Virginia. Food supply workers have been historically left out of moral and legal discussions, with their fates tied to Jim Crow-era policies. Now more than ever, we must stop our legacy of discrimination and abuse towards agriculture workers.

Event #1: Labor Day, 9/7, 9AM - 11PM -YSMIW DAYS OF ACTION

Join us on Labor Day 2020, as we post and share our support of these critical workforces with the hashtag #EssentialNotDisposableVA #EsencialNoDesechableVA.

Event #2: 9/8, 9AM - 11PM -“The Hands that Feed Us”

A collection of narratives and quotes by migrant & immigrant agricultural workers in Virginia, mostly working on tobacco and tomato farms. Share across social media platforms to amplify the voices of the hands that feed us.

Event #3: 9/9 2020, 5PM - 7PM -Farmworker 101 Webinar  ** Registration link in our bio***

The largest of paradoxes during the COVID-19 crisis is that of food supply workers — mostly undocumented or on seasonal work visas — who are considered “essential”, yet are excluded from most state and federal basic labor protections. While the entire world is purposefully socially distant, this workforce is still producing food for our tables.

YSMIW has collaborated with the Legal Aid Justice Center to create a learning opportunity for Virginians to enhance their knowledge on farmworkers and other food supply worker populations in the Commonwealth. Our goal is to incorporate diverse voices in our advocacy and organizing efforts from now until the 2021 Virginia General Assembly. Now more than ever, we must fight for the dignity and protection of workforces hidden in plain sight.

We send our deepest and most sincere condolences to the family of Hermano Edwin Rivera. May his soul Rest in Peace and his legacy Rest in Power. Our hearts may be heavy but our heads help up high as we honor our beloved Founding Father and great Lambda Leader! 🙏🏽✊🏽
-
Some of his accomplishments and leadership roles include co-founding La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, Inc., leading innovation and engineering efforts with Delphi Technologies, board member with Ibero-American League elevating underserved communities, working with his wife in Worldwide Marriage Encounter (wwme.org) and mentoring local FIRST robotics teams and organizations.⁣
-
Hermano Edwin had recently participated in our virtual National Convention a week before his untimely passing. He actively recounted the formation of La Unidad Latina and listened attentively to our State of La Fraternidad address. He would enthusiastically express the love for the fraternity he helped create.⁣ Hermano Edwin was asked what was one of his proudest moments for the fraternity to which he replied, “the proudest moment I have is knowing that I am an Hermano to over 3,000 men who believe in the power of our community.” 🔥
-
Hermano Edwin is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Leonor, his two sons Sean & Jordan, his father Edwin S. and sisters Eileen, Sandra, Mildred, Caroline and Suzanne. ⁣
-
His memory will always live in our hearts. We will respect and honor his legacy forever. As we look up to the sky we proudly say La Unidad Para Siempre Hermano Edwin! 🗣🙌🏽

21 years ago, 5 individuals set out to establish an organization that would uplift and unite the Latino community at George Mason University. On April 10th, 1999, these individuals became the Founding Line of the Alpha Delta Chapter of La Unidad Latina, Lambda Upsilon Lambda Fraternity, inc. Through their dedication, passion, service, and hard work the Latino community has and continues to flourish. Their integral role in shaping the Mason Latino community is present to this day.

We thank our Chartering Hermanos and subsequent Hermanos that came into the Alpha Delta Chapter to make it what it is today.

“Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. Labor Day also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans, and is celebrated with parties, parades and athletic events.”

Hi everyone!! - I'm interning with Voto Latino this summer in DC, and I'm looking to uplift stories and voices from the DMV area. Take a look at the stories that have already been submitted, and consider adding yours to the list so I am able to post and share it on our website. Thanks. :)
