Dear VUIM family, the University leadership has made the difficult decision to once again postpone our Annual Commencement Ceremony in response to the ongoing circumstances related to the Coronavirus Pandemic. As was the case last year, this was an extremely difficult decision to make, especially given the progress our region and nation have been able to make in response to COVID19. The entire VUIM leadership, from the members of our Board of Trustees to our Staff, acknowledges the impact of this decision but we do believe this to be in the best interest of the entire VUIM community.

If you have any questions about the decision, please feel free to reach out to us directly. Thank you so much for understanding.

"Last year was really challenging for everyone with the pandemic and the lockdown. It is not definitely easy to stay strong during this tough time. But our students did, they never gave up and they are still working hard to complete their education. I am very proud of our students," said Seyoung Ju, our Assistant Professor. "What helped me during the lockdown? I picked up a lot of DIY projects from YouTube. It really helps me with the stress and anxiety. I hope everyone is staying safe and well!"

An #acupuncturist takes a holistic approach when examining and assessing the patient’s condition. They will look at the mind, body, and spirit (or Shen) to make diagnosis and recommend treatments. They will then perform the insertion of one or more thin, sterile needles, at strategic points on the patient’s body to treat the issue. Depending on their practice, the acupuncturist might incorporate other treatments in integrative medicine, such as herbal medicine and moxibustion, to help achieve the desired outcome.

Cupping therapy involves placing cups on the skin to create suction, which may facilitate healing with blood flow as well as the flow of “qi” in the body. Depends on the patient's condition, practitioners sometimes perform cupping along with #acupuncture treatments for the best results.

Have you tried #cupping therapy before? What was your experience like?

For today's #selfcare tip, we would like to suggest trying a new way to help with stress and anxiety. Did you know that #acupuncture can help with stress and anxiety? Studies have shown that acupuncture help stimulate the body’s Nervous System and release neurochemical messenger molecules. This stimulation brings some biochemical changes that influence the homeostatic mechanisms of the body, thus promotes emotional and physical well being. Check out our past posts for other #mentalwellness tips!

VUIM clinic is currently open and accepts patients with appointments only. To schedule an appointment for acupuncture and other services, please visit our website or give us a call at 703-323-5691. Thank you!

How to help new patients feel comfortable during the acupuncture treatment

[VUIM Blog] As the practitioner of the Asian healing arts, you will often encounter patients who have little to no knowledge about Acupuncture and the field of Integrative Medicine. Helping a new patient become comfortable in receiving acupuncture for the first few visits definitely require more than answering “No” to the question, “Will it hurt?”

Our student, Renée Lee, shares her personal experience and helpful tips for this situation in her recent article. Read more on our blog.

A short guide in how to help new patients feel comfortable during their first visit and how to talk to them about acupuncture.

April is the National Stress Awareness Month, and with this year being more stressful than others due to the unique situation that we are all in, VUIM team has put together some simple tips that can be applied to students feeling stressed in their studies, and to everyone else at large. We will be sharing them over the next couple of weeks.

Tip #1: Maintain Social Connections - Social distance doesn't mean social isolation! It is very easy to start feel lonely and stressed out when you isolate yourself from others. Instead, try to stay connected with family and friends through technology by setting up a time to regularly connect with others with a quick video call. Seeing a friendly face can be a huge boost to your mental health!

"When my classes at VUIM went virtual, I moved back to North Carolina. Living near a beach there, I was able to do a lot of outdoor activities like hiking and kayaking to maintain my mental health when every place was closed during the lockdown. I also picked up yoga!" Sydney Holsipple, current student of MSA program at VUIM.

"I started my education here last year, right when the pandemic first hit. It was difficult in the beginning when everything was online, there was no hands-on experience, and it was hard to connect with my classmates when we were not next to each other in the same room. But things definitely got better over time, everyone worked their best to make up for the in-person experience, the professors were really great with that as well. We had a lot of discussion time between or after class to help keep everyone connected. I was still able to make friends with my classmates! And the professors arranged a time for us to practice over Zoom. While it was definitely not the same, I was still able to learn a lot of useful information. Overall, my first year at VUIM was really motivating, rewarding, and enjoyable. I am excited about my journey here!"
