Are Tax-Efficient Funds Worth It?

Derek Horstmeyer, professor of finance and co-founder and director of the George Mason University Student Managed Investment Fund, says, “Investors whose top concern is minimizing taxes often turn to 'tax managed'—or 'tax efficient'—mutual funds. But the returns they get may not be worth the tax savings." http://ow.ly/z10u50D8I7p

We crunched the numbers. The upshot: The returns may not be worth the tax savings.

There’s No End In Sight To Affordable Housing Crisis That Makes It Harder To Recruit And Retain Workers

Director of the Center for Real Estate Entrepreneurship Eric Maribojoc says studies have shown that the lack of affordable housing in our most productive urban employment centers has hurt the bottom line of both companies and local economies. http://ow.ly/9xIF50D2Sdv

The decades-long affordable housing crisis is also a business crisis for many business leaders who continue to find it difficult—if not impossible—to recruit or retain workers who can’t or won’t pay steep home prices so they can live near their place of employment.

How Your Company Responds To A Crisis In 2021 Can Depend On The Country Where It Is Located

Dean Maury Peiperl says that culture can make a significant difference not only in how a business responds to a crisis, but whether it considers a situation to be a crisis in the first place. http://ow.ly/Bcwl50CZuhy

The start of the new year is a good opportunity to take a fresh look at your crisis management plan to ensure it takes into account the role a country’s culture should play in how you would react to crisis situations.

The Mason Student Services has launched a new phone number 703-993-2000.

This would connect callers to one of our six proper offices based on need: the Mason Student Services Center, Undergraduate Admissions, Graduate Admissions, Student Financial Aid, Student Accounts and the Registrar.

“While seemingly small, this is actually a major step toward our goal of centralizing inbound telephone operations for the MSSC and all of our partner offices,” said Executive Director of Enrollment Services Andrew Bunting. “I am grateful to all who worked on this project to improve our service to students.”

Students can request help through the new phone number or use the online form.

With timber in port, INTRO begins its rise to become the country’s tallest all-wood building

According to the Center for Real Estate Entrepreneurship, a mass timber building is safer, cheaper and less labor-intensive than traditional steel or concrete. The center deems it actually less prone to tumbling at the hands of a scorcher—due to its beefed-up requirements for egresses, hallway sprinklers, and smoke detection. http://ow.ly/zBv150CBPm6

The 3,000 cubic meters of Austrian wood spent nearly three weeks on the Atlantic, riding the seaway into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, through Montreal and Niagara, 53 miles across Lake Ontario and, finally, on Monday, November 9, into the Port of Cleveland receptor dock on the edge of the city.

What a helpful page on all things business in the community! When taking a break from school, a good movie is my go-to when trying to relax. One trailer that I came across recently that caught my eye is for the movie Chief Zabu. It’s an interesting comedy about two real estate agents looking to land a huge deal. The writing by Neil Cohan and Zack Norman does an excellent job poking at the political landscape without taking away from the story. Along with some witty exchanges, the film has a facetious sense of humor that goes well with its many political/business troupes. It releases on streaming platforms on August 8th and I’m excited to get a full look at the film. If this peaks your interest, give the trailer a look and let me know what you think!

Hey fellow business majors, I recently saw a movie that related to my classes in a really neat way. The movie was the sci-fi thriller Emapthy, Inc. It had sort of a Black Mirror vibe, but the plot focused on a venture capitalist that gets screwed over while investing in a tech startup that is seriously lacking in ethics. I love a good sci-fi movie, but I need it to have some grounding in reality for me to relate to it. This movie totally accomplished that, and it hit home for me by intelligently working in business jargon. It's coming out on vod September 24th, and I think it will not only be a great film for the Halloween season, but it will also stand as an eerie example of what can happen when things go wrong in the world of business.
