Thank you, Veterans.

Whether you are a student here at GMU, just separating from the military, working full-time for yourself and your family, or have long since retired, we at the Mason Veteran Patriots salute all of our veterans.

Without the service of our brothers and sisters, this organization would have no reason to stand. Thank you for allowing us to serve and work alongside you.

It's #StudentSpotlight day! This week we are spotlighting our Director of Social Media, Brianna Kleismit

Brianna is originally from Alabama but moved to Virginia two years ago to join the Virginia National Guard. She is a junior at GMU majoring in Business Management with a minor in Intelligence Analysis

She joined the Mason Veteran Patriots because of her desire to stay connected with her fellow military community both in and out of the uniform. So far, her experience with MVP has allowed her to keep a strong presence on campus and and to keep busy with tons of activities and friends along the way!

What brings Brianna to her happy place is her dog, Baxter. You'll see him around campus and at lots of MVP events, so don't be afraid to stop by and say hi!

Happy Monday, everyone! This week, our Community Relations Officer Amir Mahmoud has the honor of being in our first evet #StudentSpotlight for the Mason Veteran Patriots

Amir is a Virginia native, but his family is originally from Egypt 🇪🇬 He is currently a Junior here at GMU majoring in Government and International Politics with a minor in Criminology, Law & Society, ad Intelligence Analysis

He aspires to be a HUMINT Operator in the Intelligence community, then be elected to office after retirement

One of his favorite quotes is, "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it an never forget what they did here." - Abraham Lincoln

His advice to others is "You've made it this far, no one can stop you from reaching your end game. Know your worth and don't play yourself. Most importantly, ASK FOR HELP. No one can go it alone so don't be afraid to reach out."

Though Amir is not a student veteran, he is a shining example of a student that has been involved and pivotal to what we do at MVP 🇺🇸 With help from students like him, MVP can create an environment that not only encompasses veterans but all of GMU and the great students it has to offer

Invitation

Since 1944 the Servicemen's Readjustment Act, also known as the GI Bill, has impacted the lives of millions of Veterans and their families. The law provided a wide range of benefits to Veterans returning from World War II, including low-cost home loans, education and vocational training, unemployment payments, and an expansion of Veterans' health care.

In honor of this anniversary, EY (Ernst & Young), one of the largest professional services firms in the world, is hosting a community event in Tysons, Virginia on April 30th from 3 PM to 6 PM. This event is a great opportunity to network with the DMV area veterans community, and for those who are interested, explore employment opportunities at EY.

Please share this opportunity with members of your student veteran community whom you think might appreciate this opportunity.

You can learn more about the event and RSVP here: https://gema.ey-vx.com/1146/7836/compose-email/invitation.asp?sid=blankform

Do you enjoy learning and working with other veterans on campus? Are you interested in adding leadership experience to your resume? Do you want to be involved in a network of professionals that opens doors to career opportunities all across the nation?

The Mason Veteran Patriots (George Mason’s chapter of the Student Veterans of America) are looking for student veterans to serve as officers for the 2019-2020 school year. MVP is focused on improving the campus life of student veterans and their families, helping them towards their path to success during and after their collegiate careers. We also provide student veterans with a network of peers all across the nation that can give advice from how to succeed as a non-traditional college student with an established life outside of school, to the best internship opportunities from veteran-minded companies, and even tips and tricks to navigating the VA. Officers work closely with SVA Headquarters, who are always prepared to assist our chapter with whatever we need to succeed. The SVA annual convention is the largest gathering of Post 9/11 Veterans in the US and provides student veterans with all the tools to become a leader in both your campus and community.

If you are interested in running for an open officer position, send us a short e-mail ([email protected]) with the following information, so that we can evaluate the best fits for these positions. Applications will be accepted until April 22nd, and we will make our decisions no later than April 26th. - Name
- G#
- Major
- Short personal statement (about 100 words) about yourself, and
- One thing you would like to see as an improvement for veteran life on campus “Yesterday’s warriors, today’s scholars, tomorrow’s leaders” #MasonVeteranPatriots #SVA #SVALeads

Hi MVPs. I work in University Career Services. I would like to invite you to an event next Thursday. Northrop Grumman is hosting a WebEx networking event specifically for student (and alumni) veterans. The Event will take place from 12-1pm. Let me know if you have any questions.
Happy Veterans Day! The American Legion received an invite from Accenture for DC student veterans that I was hoping to extend to MVP: are any student veterans available for lunch this Friday Nov 15th to discuss how their experience with the GI Bill has been at their downtown DC offices (close to Metro Center) 12-1:30? Accenture has the contract for Forever GI Bill implementation and wants to learn how the experience has been like for veterans using the benefit- they will also be connecting interested veterans with their military recruiting team. Please let me know if interested here or hit me up at [email protected] (I cover the Legin's education advocacy) Thanks!
Hello, George Mason University, Sports and Recreation Studies, is conducting a study to better understand the constraints faced by veterans when recreating in outdoor parks and how those constraints impact those veteran’s intentions to recreate at these locations. In particular, we are looking to focus our research on minority races within the veteran population. These minority groups are under researched in the field and we are hoping to further gain insight on the constraints faced by all veterans as opposed to a singular homogeneous group. We will be conducting one-on-one interviews in person, via skype, or over the phone. These interviews will take approximately 1 hour of your time. Participation is voluntary and confidential. If you have any questions regarding this project or are interested in participating, please contact Jeremy Steinel at [email protected] * Your participation in this study is voluntary and you may withdraw from the study at any time without penalty or loss of benefit. There are no foreseeable risks to participating in the study. The results of this study may be published but no names will be used and individual responses will be maintained in confidence by the researchers. Anonymity and confidentiality will be assured.
