WIRELESS MICS AND THE FCC:
On Thursday, July 13th, the Federal Communications Commission will hold its July Open Meeting, and is considering a new proceeding in response to petitions filed by Shure and Sennheiser. This new proceeding would propose permitting certain qualifying professional theatre, music, performing arts organizations, and similar organizations to obtain Part 74 licenses to operate wireless mics based on the applicant’s demonstrated need and requisite professional ability to operate in the bands, even if they routinely use fewer than 50 wireless microphones.
Recently, Microsoft sent out a statement to the FCC in which they "recommended that the Commission not propose to permit an expanded class of wireless microphone users to block wireless broadband operations in White Spaces channels.”
Theatre Communications Group, in addition to many others in our industry, believes that it is in the best public interest for the FCC to allow the proceeding to move forward and not cave to Microsoft. The resulting discussion could quite possibly result in a solution that satisfies all parties.

This week Event Services held its annual summer training which includes helping new Patriots move into their housing.

Event Services Technicians:
- Assist the university community in the organization and technical operation of events.
- Act as a liaison between Event Management / Event Services and the visiting university community.
- Able to operate and reconfigure in-house and mobile AV systems for event support as well as other equipment needed and reserved by the client for their event.
- Reports all client usage of facilities and equipment during shift and associated activities.
Event Services Concierge:
- Face-to-face customer service support for event venues and Student Center buildings
- Phone support and coordination with team
- Manage event venue access
- Enforce event venue guidelines for Student Center spaces
- Report shift events as appropriate and required
- Connect client devices to in-house audio/video systems (training provided)
- Limited technical troubleshooting of in-house audio/video systems (training provided)
Event Services Rental Assistant:
- Setup and breakdown of all rental equipment for events on the George Mason campus.
This includes tables, chairs, staging, pipe and drape, and other miscellaneous rental items.
- Assisting the Operations Supervisor with the cleaning and maintenance of all event rentals inventory
- Assisting the Operations Supervisor with the organizational management of the rentals inventory.
- Assisting the Event Services Concierge staff with the setup/breakdown of various venues located on campus.
- Other duties as assigned by the Operations Supervisor or designated shift supervisor.
Congrats to our recent graduates of the Class of 2016! Joey McCloskey, Lauren Brown, and Calil Davis, we're very proud of you for all that you've accomplished while serving on our team!
We are quickly growing in numbers so that we can better serve the University. This April we hired on three new full time staff members and so far this May we have hired over 8 new student employees. We're very excited to have the additional support as we continue to improve the event experience at George Mason University.

Summer is a very busy and exciting time for our Event Services team! While classes are out we're hard at work upgrading our team and our equipment for a strong debut in Fall 2016!

Mason students came together to compete in both philanthropic initiatives and physical challenges to raise money for local non-profits. Over 24,300 cans were donated for Food for Others, 19,000 toiletries, toothbrushes, soap and paper towels were donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) and local shelters. Additionally, students raised $9,500 to donate to a local shelter.
