Differences That Make A Difference: Stories & Strategies To Inspire Women Leaders - Educational Collaborative for International Schools (ECIS)

Inspiration comes to mind when I first met these women in September, virtually of course. Since then we have presented together, now published an article, and will help Bridget McNamer host a leadership summit in Montana this summer. It is truly an honor to work side by side with these intelligent leaders.

The Curriculum Fallacy, Part I | Peter Mott - Intrepid ED News

A great read on how our curriculum needs to change. I love Peter Mott's perspective and love following him.

The insistence on a supposedly “shared” and universal canon of knowledge was not designed to produce critical, independent, and creative thinkers.

A New PK-12 Education Ecosystem Framework for a New Normal

"One way to pay tribute to the struggles and loss is by creating new opportunities for those who will be most vulnerable to future pandemics. Doing so will require us to rethink normal and embrace a framework where communities, policymakers, researchers, investors, and technical assistance providers work alongside and in sync with schools and communities for the betterment of students, teachers, and these very communities." ~Dr. Irvin Scott

My education peeps interested in science and environmental ed!

Can you believe we are less than two weeks away from our first VAEE Virtual Mini-Conference of the year? Though we wish we were meeting in person- we are so excited for what we've dreamt up for you from photo contests to live cocktail demos, from workshops to networking we have been working to innovate and present a great conference for all of you!

The Conference team wanted to reach out with a few reminders and updates to remind you of all the great opportunities. Here are seven reasons that you simply must attend our February 20th Winter in the West Mini-Conference!

1) Pay What You Can

Did you know that this year's conference is PWYC! Starting at $0 and increasing by $5 up until the suggested rates we are making sure that the community comes before profit and want to enable equal access to everyone wanting to attend this year's conference no matter their financial situation! It's super easy and no questions asked!

2) Available All YEAR!

Not able to attend the sessions live- have to step away for part of the day? Don't worry all concurrent and keynote sessions will be recorded and available to anyone registered for the conference for an ENTIRE YEAR! That's over 9 hours of on-demand content and certainly a deal you don't want to miss out on!

3) Keynote Speaker- Mr. Anthony Swann

February's keynote speaker will be 2020 Virginia Teacher of the Year Anthony Swann! Check out this video about Anthony from the NBC Nightly News! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zq5mFZAtw_o

4) Photo Contest

Time spent outdoors is a valuable part of all our lives. VAEE wants to encourage conference registrants to spend time outside during the weekend of the Mini-Conferences.

While you are on your outdoor adventure snap a socially distanced photo and tag VAEE on Instagram @thevaee. The photo with the most likes on instagram will win a 2022-2023 VAEE membership! “Likes” will be tallied by 6pm on Friday after each conference and winners will be announced on Saturday.

5) Young Leaders Panel

Come hear three emerging young EE leaders share about the actions they are taking to make a difference in their communities!

6) Awesome Workshop & Concurrent Session Options

We have two great two-hour workshop opportunities available for this quarter's conference and 9 additional concurrent sessions to choose from! Check out the February Schedule at a Glance on our website for more info!

7) Networking, Community Conversations, Games & Virtual Hour

We know that for so many of you a major part of attending the VAEE conference is connecting and networking with colleagues from across the Commonwealth. Though it's certainly not the same as meeting in person we have ample opportunities for you to connect virtually in many ways including morning networking community call, our virtual happy hour, and more!

So you can see that's just seven of the many great reasons that you should register for February's Winter in the West Mini-Conference today!

NAIS - Combatting Parental Anxiety With a New School Partnership Model

Dr. Rob Evans and Dr. Michael Thompson poignantly consider that the rules are changing– or will have changed post-pandemic– and that a new community "contract" may be required. Here they pick up where their ongoing conversations were left off, challenging our thinking about a new model for school community building. Both have been head of schools, worked with hundreds of schools, and are psychologists.

In 2017, John Allman, head at Trinity School in New York City, caused a stir throughout the independent school world when his start-of-school letter to families went viral. It criticized an accelerating trend in which parents have a more transactional view of school. He wrote of “consumerist famil...

Everyone Is Talking About 'Reinventing Education.' Here Are 10 Schools Actually Doing It.

"It’s time for a nationwide commitment and investment to invent wholly new systems that enable a learner-centered, socially-just future for education. Leaders at all levels must make it a priority to reinvent how we educate young people and prepare them for a world that is vastly different from the one for which their schools were designed." by Kelly Young

When the federal government doesn't intervene during downturns, the states often cut school spending. In turn, teachers may earn less or lose their jobs. And three in four teachers are female.

Restore Your Sense of Control — Despite the Pandemic

These changes have been stressful — nearly 7 in 10 U.S. workers say navigating the pandemic has been the most stressful time of their entire professional careers. One of the reasons the pandemic has been so stressful is because it has stripped people of their autonomy, or the extent to which they can be themselves and have discretion over their actions.

Autonomy leads to adaptability.
