A Trillion Birthdays
If you think rabbits reproduce quickly, wait until you hear about microbes. A single bacterial cell can divide once every 20 minutes. Bacteria also do not grow in the same way as we think of growth; an individual growing larger. In bacteria, one full-grown adult cell divides to form two full-grown adult offspring cells and this process is referred to as binary fission. When bacteria grow, they are not really increasing in size; bacteria increase in numbers. When bacteria are actively reproducing; 1 cell becomes 2 cells in 20 minutes, 2 becomes 4 after 40 minutes, 4 becomes 8 after 1 hour and so on. This reproduction rate is referred to as logarithmic growth, cell numbers increase logarithmically. At this reproduction rate, a single cell can reproduce into a trillion cells in about 10 hours.
Bacteria are also invisible to the naked eye. When you look at an agar plate, you are literally looking at trillions of cells.

I just wanted to share the success we've had with the garden this summer. Prof. Picone and I were able to keep it going throughout the summer and we're able to hand it off to McKay. We even were able to get receive donated plants from Gove Farm in Leominster to add to it. Hopefully we can donate soon!

Hi everyone! I'm just finishing up an internship at New England Peptide in Gardner and wanted to make you guys aware of a few job openings! (Hello recent grads!) there is an Antibody Technician opening as well as a spot in the shipping department. It wouldn't hurt to send a resume and cover letter if you're interested in other departments as well. Science background not necessary for shipping. Both are 40 hr/week. This is the best company I've ever worked for and I'm happy to answer any questions you might have! If you're ready to send your resume please contact Ed Pominville, Synthesis Department Manager, at [email protected].

I wanted to thank all of our members and EBoard for another successful year. We got a lot done and I know that the new EBoard will continue this new path of success and do even more. I had a great time being president of the club and getting to know a lot of you. Best of luck with the remainder of your finals and have a great summer. See you around campus! :-)

Just a reminder that we will not be meeting next Tuesday due to it being a Monday schedule. I will send out announcements that Monday that will replace the meeting.

I also thought I would this out there: Dr. Samulak is looking for student volunteers to work with students from the McKay school. If you are interested, you should send her an email or go to her office. There is an opportunity to help on any of the 15 visits.
