November 2012 PTK meeting

For the meeting of November we went over some of the issues addressed in last month’s meeting while incorporating new ideas for the month of November.

We discussed the Cumbee Center and the different types of items that can be donated, including paper and bath products. Students can also ask their professors for extra credit for donations.

We discussed the issue of getting people to donate towards single mothers for Christmas in reference to the Adopt a Child for Christmas project.

We discussed United for Fitness, how it works, the qualifications for winning the event and the prizes for losing the most weight. This includes the person who lost the most weight and body mass over a certain period of time wins the event. The date of the final weigh-in is December 5.

We discussed the website collegfish.org and the benefits students obtain by using them. We also discussed the college scholarship binders Faith Moore and Jeremy Hargis compiled to give students better insight into finding colleges who offer PTK scholarships.

The last issue addressed was the hurricane relief effort for victims of Hurricane Sandy and how to incorporate donations towards the American Red Cross. We also made a point that Phi Theta Kappa will not be collecting donations but we will only be referring them to the agencies that support hurricane relief, like the American Red Cross. This will not only help support the hurricane relief effort but will give people an ultimatum towards donating.

This session was very informative and we as a student body came up with new ideas on how to gather new information and work it out as a group.

Tomorrow is Election Day! Ensure your voice is heard by voting for your national and local candidates. Be sure to research your choices to make intelligent decisions. If you vote uninformed, you become part of the problem and not part of the solution. The Alpha Xi Lambda chapter at Aiken Technical College chose to help educate voters by participating in the Political Awareness Forum, which brought together democrat and republican affiliates to help young voters understand the significance of the elections. We encouraged individuals to register to vote and had representatives from the local Voters Registration Office facilitate the education and due process of voting. Our chapter chose the Honors in Action question: “If people choose not to participate in the political process, to what extent do they forfeit the right to protest the outcome?” In reference to this ideal and provided information, we sincerely hope you will all exercise your right to vote and do so responsibly. So get out there and support your country and VOTE!

Sincerely,
Jeremy Hargis

The walk was intended to honor those affected by cancer, and to give members of the campus community an opportunity to stay active.
